Plug Wires @ 65,000

I've got 65,000 on my 97 4.6 liter f-150. It started missing almost like it was a trans problem. My first thought was well it's about time for plugs anyway but it just did not act like a plug miss so I took it to the local dealer who charged me $75 to tell me to change the plugs(#3 the main culpret) and wires. When I asked how much? they quoted around $500 including the $75 I was already out. But he was impressed that the wires had a 12 month guarentee. Big deal. For $500 bucks I would expect a lifetime warrenty. But no cigar. So I went to Advance Auto and got lifetime warrenty plugs and wires for around a 100 bucks and and found someone to change them for around $75. My only regret is that I took it to the dealer in the first place. They would not even say if this did not fix it there would be no cost to me for their mistake. Bye Bye guys, I won't be back unless it's for parts I cannot get anywhere else.

You will be lucky if those aftermarket wires make it past 20K miles.

That's not necessarily true at all... I've got almost 100k miles on the original stock wires that everyone seems to think is useless after 20k miles. Although I will probably go ahead and replace them pretty quickly while replacing the plugs, in all honestly they don't NEED changed at all. I don't believe he even mentioned which brand of wires he bought, but I'd expect a LOT more than 20k miles out a new set of wires.

Type Wires

The wires were the best they had. Autolite Professional OEM series. Suppose to be as good or better than original. As I mentioned they have a lifetime warrentee so next time it's just labor, although because of how diffucult it is to change plugs/wires labor is a big deal. $500. Who would have ever thought.

I see it all day long, you get what you pay for.

There's a reason OEM parts cost more.

I'm gonna go with everyone else. Use motorcraft plug wires. I've gone down this road & many others with 4.6's have too. Even the best plug wires just don't seem to seal like the Motorcraft ones do.

You don't need to pay a Ford dealer to put them on. A local, reputable mechanic can do it for much less, or you can even attempt it yourself.

You can get them for $66.66 from http://www.fordpartsonline.com plus unknown shipping. I'm not sure what they run from a dealer.

Has anybody tried the Ford Motor Sport 9mm wires from a 4.6 Mustang on a F150?

I like grinomytes approach, I feel the same way. A hot saturday afternoon, a case of ice cold suds, my craftsman rollaway cab, the babes next door in bikinis, working on the truck, priceless!!!!!
