SOunds Like a Diesel

At the begining of the year I just purchased a new 03 F150 4x4 to replace my 00 that I totaled.

Question is that sometime the truck sounds like a diesel when you are inside of the cab. To me it seems to idle a little rough compared to my 00 that i had. The 00 did have the 4.6 and the new truck has the 5.4.

Any suggestions on what is causing the odd sound? Or is the 5.4 just noiser than the 4.6?

maybe it is just break in noise.

make sure oil is right

make sure oil filter is warm after start up

prolly normal and will go away as miles are put on

DPFE

my truck did the same thing. sounded like a diesel called Ford service Tech. said it was the DPFE. was replaced under warranty. fixed problem after that IAC went bad also replaced under warranty. that fixed rough idle. sick of going back to dealer for all these little headaches. Good Luck.
Felix......
P.S. now have to go back to replace bad rotor and leaky rear axle seal.under warranty. Thinking about trading for a Chevy.

I have thought the same thing about my new '03, it has more engine noise than my '00 had. I thought the big thing with the '03's were that they are quieter than previous years.

I had also just recently posted a thread about a rough idle with mine while in "park", is yours while in gear or in park also?

Flexster - what's a DPFE? (sorry I must not be up on the abbreviations).

About the only time that I have noticed the disel sound is when the truck is cold and I am sitting at an idle. It does not seem to matter if it is in park or in gear. I also have a little bit of a rough idle. With my 00 I could barely hear it at an idle. But I can hear this truck and also feel it at an idle.

DougS Do you also have the diesel sound? How many miles you got on it? I am pushing 3k right now.

And by the way my truck is exactly like yours color and all except I got the STX package.

Nice name calling pal. I don't usually respond to name callers but I am a little sick of people who come on this site and have a little problem with their ford and immediately say they want to buy a chevy or dodge. Please do.

Besides it doesn't matter to whom you were talking to, this is a public board and I was talking to you!

Now settle down Beavis, and use the site to learn about your truck.

No, I don't really have a "diesel" sound, as a matter of fact sitting idle the engine is nice and quiet, my engine noise is on acceleration.

I know I will get a little engine noise on acceleration, (not only have I had the '00 F-150 in the past, but before that one I had a '99 F-250SD with the 5.4L), but for some reason my '03 seems to "rumble" more. Maybe I just have an exhaust issue.

I am just a hair under 3,000 miles on the truck right now. My truck was an earlier build (9/02).

Hey guys,

I was just reading this email because of the diesel sound and it made me think about piston slap so I thought I would read it. I did not even notice that you were from Liberty Flexster. That would be cool if we could meet up. There is also a guy that I work with from NKC (Jackal) and he might be interested in hooking up wiht us also. I will talk to him about it in May when I start work again from school. Keep in contact about it guys.
