Lunging at startup?

Just recently my Expedition with the 5.4 and 4R100 has started jerking foward at startup. It's weird because it doesn't do it all the time so I can't figureout what is causing it. I remember a while back some others have the same problem but I can't find any info on this. Was there ever a fix for the problem?

TIA - Dae

My Expy does the same thing but I think I have an E40D? It may be a linkage issue between the gear shift and the tranny somewhere. Sometimes after I shut it off I hear and see the gear shift pop up as though it's not quite all the way in park? If that's possible. Sorry I can't be too much assistance here. Just thought I'd lend some moral support.

Do a search on the Expy Forum - we beat this one to death a few months ago. It only happens on 4R100 equipped trucks when they have been sitting a while.

Ian,

Thanks for the info, I found it. It seemed as tho people are just willing to live with the problem. I myself can live with it but I went ahead and filed a complaint with the NHTSA, complaint # 10008507. Maybe if others file Ford will do something to fix it.

I have the same problem with my 01. After startup...and if you put it in gear before the computer sets itself, it starts lurching forward. The only way to disengage it is by hitting the throttle a little. I'd just let all the sensors come online before putting her into gear. Good luck.

MF150,

It's not after it starts, it happens when it starts. It's like starting a manual without holding the clutch in. It jumps foward.

jerk on start up

Fords not looking for a fix on this one because it normal. It does occur on any ford car or truck at times due to drag inside the transmission on start up and the normal clearence in the park pawl.

Yep, same thing here. 98 5.4 w/4R100 first noticed it when the salesman brought me the keys for the test drive on that faitful day in the Fall of 97. It has done it every single time it has been started since (roughly 5 thousand times I would guess) I have not had ONE single problem with this truck, even every lightbulb is the factory one. I figure if that little lunge on startup is the worse thing about the truck then I'm doing good.
