5.4 Gas mileage question

My buddies dad has a '02 F-250 reg cab long bed 4x4 wtih the 5.4. It's a plain jane truck-no options except air conditioning. Hes an electrical contractor and hes got 3 toolboxes full of equipment and he also does alot of farm work with the truck. He doesnt baby the truck, he uses it like a trucks supposed to. The problem is that he has been getting around 8.5 mpg lately and he doesnt know why. Its got 9,000 miles on it and the trucks rated for around 16 or so, but only getting 8-9. Its running fine-no signs of problems. Any suggestions at the bad milage??

Does he keep it idleing a lot while he is working? I know some contractors do this. Any mods? Maybe the MAF is dirty, PCV valve is plugged?

I would change the air filter, fuel filter, and reset the computer just to start. Then wait a coupel more tanks to see if it gets better.

Re: 5.4 Gas mileage question

My buddies dad has a
'02 F-250 reg cab long bed
4x4
with the 5.4.
= (even with all the above its rated 16)

hes got 3 toolboxes full of equipment = (Ouch!)
does alot of farm work with the truck. = (Pow!)
He doesnt baby the truck = (Blam!)
he uses it like a trucks supposed to = (Zowwiee!)

The problem is that he has been getting around 8.5 mpg lately and he doesnt know why. = (Hahaha, Hohoho, Hehehe!)
Answer - According to Ford
1)Take off the three toolboxes
2)Take the truck off the farm
3)Baby the truck
4)Don't use the truck like you think it's supposed to
and in the ambient temperatures of summer, with successive windless days, you will achieve 16 mpg.

Raoul said it better than I could!

This is normal for that truck and how he is using it.

What rear does he have in it? It sounds like he only uses it around town, this is normal mileage for around town with all that weight in the bed.

Tell him not to worry all other manufacturers trucks will get the same mileage with how he is using it. The only way to improve is to either follow Raoul's rules or get a powerstroke!

He doesnt abuse the truck he just uses it. He drives it alot, sometimes 70 miles one way to get to a job site. Its 100% stock. He was just wondering why his gas milage wasnt even hitting double digits cuase he said that his old '89 3/4 ton chevy with 4x4 and 350 auto got hella better milage than this thing.

next time im out there ill check the air filter, maf, and pcv to see if that could be a prob. But yea 3 toolboxes, 4x4, 3/4 ton, and probley 3.55 or 3.73 rear willl suck with milage

Remeber ALL 5.4's are rated the same mileage! Regardless of what truck it is in!

I doubt your friend abuses his truck it is an f-250 and they drink the the stuff!

I also doubt the air filter and maf are a problem at 9k.

Also the truck isn't really broken in yet at 9k.

Try and ask around in the Superduty forum to see what kind of mileage people are getting.
