need help with fuel filter issues.....

hey guys. i got a 98 5.4l f-150 4x4, and i really need to change the fuel filter. the dealership tells me you have to have a special tool to release the little retainer type clips on the hoses....is this true? anybody got a better suggestion on how i can change the fuel filter myself? also, which brand of filter is best?

thanks in advance....

Yes you need a special tool. Do a search and you'll find a bunch of threads about replacing the filter. (with instructions and pics )

But it's not expensive, usually under 10 dollars at any parts store. You use it to release the locking clips located inside the fuel lines that connect to the fuel filter. Also be prepared to get some gas on you unless you plug the ends of the fuel filter. Also be prepared to use some muscle, it takes a fair amount of strength to get the old filter out of the holder and put the new one in. Overall, it is a very managable job, heck, I've done it 4 or 5 times already. If I can do it, so can anyone!

You'll need the tool, but it's available at most parts stores. Try and get the metal one, not the plastic one. It's a lot stronger and more durable

I got a mouth full of gas the first time, try not to put any part of your body under it.The best way is on a lift if you have one.

have a large towel handy..that helps keep the spill to a minimum...then put it out on the clothes line till it vapors off...don't wash it wet..it's the drying part that gets fun

I would suggest using saftey goggles as well. I did it without the first time and . . . well I won't be doing that again.

Also has anyone come up with a decent technique to remove that filter? I found that a large amount of swearing and some blood from my knuckles tends to losen it up a tad.

The tool cost me about 19.95 at Checker. Took me about 15 minutes to replace it. All they had was the plastic tool, which worked fine. Like everyone else has said......just don't lay underneath it, unless you want to take your weekly shower early.

need help with fuel filter issues (reply)

I popped the red switch on the "emergency fuel cutoff" to relieve the pressure, used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the clips, have a bucket to catch the fuel in the lines, and replaced with a purolator filter, took a total of bout 20 minutes

Is that the same button you push to rest the system when the emergency shutoff kicks out?
