I replaced my old F-250 with a 460 and a C-6 tranny for my 2000 F-150 with a 5.4. Every time I catch myself grumbling about the price of gas, I think of the good old days, "6 MPG".
I bought a honda for when I want good gas milage.

Hey before you rush out to trade you 5.4l for the 4.6 litre let me tell you this .... i bought my 2002 f150 4x4 about a week ago. i got the 5.4 and it has 31" tires on it. i test drove a 4.6 litre with stock tires and two wheel drive and it wasnt even close. the 4.6 falls on it face after 1st gear. the 5.4 is much faster and more powerful even with the bigger tire and the 4x4. dont make the mistake of getting the 4.6 i think you will be kicking your self for that.

p.s. by the way the 4.6 even had less miles then the 5.4 its just a dog. and if you get the 4.6 in an expedition you wont be able to get out of your own way. dont get me wrong i love fords but that 4.6 is a dog. its just not a good truck motor

Drop HBO from your cable line-up, and call waiting/ caller Id from your phone and then you can afford the gas

Funny how some talk about the high price of gas and they are paying a $70 cable bill, drink $1 bottled water etc.....if you put it in perspective it is money well spent (gas that is).

Well, I drive a 4.6L (it's what I could get financed). I drive about 100 miles a day to/from work, and the price hike raised my weekly bill by about $15. I won't die from that. Pack your lunch instead of eating out. 3 days of NOT going to McD's or BK and there's the difference. Don't go the other 3 days (I'm on the two-job, 6 days a week plan), and I'm plus $15.

BTW as far as power goes, I didn't see much difference between the 4.6 and 5.4s that I test drove. Same set-ups, regular cab, 4x4, short bed, auto. You could tell, but it wasn't a big deal. I think the 4.6 only starts to dog out in the heavier setups like quad cabs and explorers, etc, where you'd definitely want more power.

wetanner: I know the feeling, went from a '78 F-250 351M @ about 8 miles/gallon to a '98 F150 4.6L @ about 17 MPG. To me this IS high-mileage.

And I agree with others, that it isn't worth giving up what I'd give up to get a 40+ MPG vehicle.

I wish I got 15 mpg with my 4.6! I'm getting around 11 mpg here in the city...those damn stop lights and hesitant drivers! To top things off, I'm paying at some places $2.49 per gallon for premium! I've cut back my driving significantly. I just go to school and work, both of which are within 5 mi. of the house. Next will be public transit if the Bush war pops off. I heard a rumor that prices will be going up to around $5. per gallon! Oh NO!!!

if you wanted to save money, ditching the cell phone will save a huge amount. For 5 years of use of the cell phone will cost you $250,000 in savings at the age of 65.

I dont get whey people buy things and dont have enough money for misshaps, such as blown motors and such. I say if you cant pay cash now, dont bother getting it, and if you get it, your life style shouldn't change a bit.

$2100 for grad school seems a bit low, where does she go?

i have a truck out of necessity for the work that it does for me. so i keep an old mazda protege that gets DOUBLE the fuel mileage of the truck. it's a better commuter and my truck will last all that much longer. i do have to laugh a bit at the people who "need" a suburban or excursion to haul a boat twice a year. 35 gallons at 2 bucks a gallon is a lot of dough; and that lasts about a week at 10 mpg. and most of the time it is hauling a kid in a car seat to the grocery store to get a tin of nutmeg. don't start an avalanche of hate mail. i know some people really DO need these big vehicles. but i'd bet that 80% don't. i wonder how sales will be affected if gas prices are at a permanently higher level? apparently the biggest SUV sales are very soft currently.

Well, since this is over 2 1/2 years ago, I'd say he's really hurting now!!

What I wouldn't give to see $2.00/gallon gas again!!

Actually kind of interesting that the posts are just as much relevant toady as there were 2 1/2 years ago... except the changes are more dynamic... it's all what you have been accustomed to..
