I was just at dealers to get engine light check and resolved that problem but they suggest upgrading computer with lastest program at a cost of $92. does anyone know the benefits of this 1997 150 with 4.6L and 71000 K

Thanks

The only thing that will help is to lighten your wallet. If there was a recall or some sort of emmisions issue they would have let you know. Ask them what exactly they want to do. The computers generally don't need maintenence.

I agree... About the only time I have heard of dealers updating the computer software is in an attempt to eliminate predetonation after eliminating some of the more common causes (and might I add, I'm not aware of a single person that was sucessful in eliminateing their problem due to a software update.) I'd save my money! (Might I add, if you ever were to have a reason to upgrade your computer, get a chipped burned instead!)

Thunder50,

If your truck is running Ok don't bother to have the PCM reflashed. What the reflash does is upload the latest calibration information for that PCM code.
Through the model year certain problems have cropped up and Ford fixed the problem by changing the computer programming. As mentionned if it was an immissions or saftey problem Ford would have done it for free.

Besides....

Besides, if my memory serves me… PCM is covered with 7 years/80000 miles warranty. They should do that for free any ways. But check your warranty card…

Don't get fleeced....

Keep the money man. If they resolved the problem then I don't see the benefit to updating the PCM.

Put that $92 towards a auxillary trans cooler or something.

Just my $0.02 worth.
