Unhappy Where did the oil go?

I have a 98 expedition with the 5.4L. I've lost 3 quarts of oil in the last 8,000 miles. I got under the truck but don't see oil anywhere, so I'm assuming it is going out the exhaust. The truck only has 70,000 miles on it. Any one else have this problem? Recall maybe?

According to my math you are losing a quart on the average of every 2600 + miles, which is really not bad especially for a truck with 70000 + on the clock. I wouldn't worry about it a bit.

Ford considers oil consumption of 1 quart per 1,000 miles OK. I think its a bit excessive though. Theres alot of people putting in a quart of oil between changes of 5K so yours is not abnormal. However if it just started doing this I would look further. Check your pvc valve, check for leaks etc.
Good luck.
Jes
Edit: PCV not pvc :

be willing to bet your PCV valve is stuck and it's sucking oil right out of the cover

I have no idea how long it has done this, I've only owned it for the last 8,000 miles. I didn't relize it was using any oil until I checked and it was 3qt low. I really can't believe I didn't trash the engine. I'll check out the pcv valve, I'm really hoping it's not the valve seals.

I'm a bit confused. You've had the truck for 8,000 miles, you just checked the oil & it's 3 qts. low?

Have you done an oil change since buying this truck? If you did, it was 8,000 miles ago when you bought it? What is you planned drain interval for this truck?

If your planning on extended drain intervals, then it is a good idea to check your oil level every time you get gas.

As for oil use, most people change there oil a 3 months / 3k miles. Some would consider it to be normal (not me) to find it 1 qt. low at 3000 miles. This isn't too far away from where you're at.

It's my wifes truck. I had planned on 5-6000 miles per oil change, but since I don't drive it the miles crept up on me. I bought the truck and changed the oil that week. 8,000 miles later I checked it again.

Yeah, 8,000 miles is a good bit to go on one oil change, unless it is synthetic oil, then you should be ok. I would change it every 3-4 thousand miles. Good luck finding out your problem.

I'll put money on the fact that it only used 1 quart during the fisrt 5,000 miles & used the other 2 in the remaining 3,000.

Do you have a reason for this hunch? It seems like the rate would be constant. Oh, and yea it's synthetic oil.

Okay, I didn't realize it was synthetic we were talking about. If you just switched to synthetic, msparks recently answered a similar question regarding oil usage when switching to synthetic & how it happens. The good news is that it will quit using oil after it cleans all the sludge out of the engine.
