Need help with high end issues, please.

Hi-

Just got my truck back from the body shop. It was in a head-on with a fallen 75 ft. tree, and has been in the shop, sitting, for 7 weeks. They replaced everything from the fan to the bumper. I took her out last night hoping that all she needed was to have the carbon blown of her system. Upon acceleration on the Freeway....approx. 80 - 100 mph, I witnessed what felt like a studder/ lack of acceleration power. The truck seemed to loose power in this speed range. After a couple other attempts, the acceleration was smoother, but something doesn't feel right. Any suggestions? I was thinking somthing in the EGR system might be clogged?

I have a 01 4.6ltr. w/ K&N FIPK, Flowmaster cat back, Superchip and all Redline fluids. 4r-70w tranny with 3:08 ratio rear-end.

Thanks for you time.

It might be a simple as old gas. Run some techron through a new tank of fuel and see if it helps. I don't think the the EGR would be a problem. Isn't it only working at low speeds? The chip is still in right? If not it might be the speed limiter.
Let us know how it turns out.
Jes.

Did they re paint the front of the truck? Probably in order to match the paint. Check out your air filter. Sanding dust could clog the filter. In order to remove the Fan they had to move the FIPK. They may have forgotten to re-attach something or just left a clamp on it loose.
Check all the plug wires. If i remember they are on coil packs for the 4.6 in 97. They may have disturbed the wires when removing the rad or fan shroud.

Hey, thanks for the replies. They did re-paint and blend the front of the truck. They also removed the FIPK, but I installed the replacment, so the intake shouldn't be the problem. The chip is securly seated in its spot and taped just like the directions say. Do you think running the engine w/o the air filter could have caused the lack of smooth high end power. I visited my truck while in the re-construction stage and they (the body shop) had the engine going w/o the air filter on the FIPK. As far as gas goes, I only fill up with Chevron 91, the highest available in California. It sat in the tank for the whole seven weeks, so when I picked it up, I almost intuitively picked up a bottle of Redline Fuel System Cleaner and added it to the system. I still have to check out the coil packs and wires...I will do that later today. Like I said before, the problem is better than it was, but the darn thing doesn't open up like it used to. Maybe I'm being too picky, but the truck only has 16,000 mi. on it.

thanks again for you help. I'll keep ya posted if I find anything with teh coilpacks and wires.

Wink

The 4.6 Has a rev limiter on this motor.

Hit the programmed redline and it will cut fuel!

Pissed- thanks for your reply. Your right, we do have a top end limiter. I think it varies somewhere between 98 and 100 and something. I don't know the exact range.

You might want to clean the MAF sensor.

The mass airflow sensor in the FIPK is at the base of the filter element. Neither the filter nor the mass airflow sensor was on the truck while they had it idling in the shop. I don't know what their rational was for doing this. On a better note, tonight, on the way home from school, I punched it a couple times and the engine opened up more. Maybe the loss of consistent power on the freeway is due to the long storage period while they re-built the front end. I will check the plug wires, now.

It may just be taking the superchip some time to relearn your driving tactics. Remember, to do all that work, I'm sure they disconnected your battery for some time.

Just a thought...

I was thinking the same thing, flea. I just got back from running her on 280 north bound, a rural 6 lane freeway in california. I dropped the accelerator to the floor and within no time, I was at 100+ with two other people in the car. I normally wouldn't endanger other's lives like that, but they insisted that I show them what I was talking about. Conclusions: I think you are right. The slugishness is prob. because the truck has been sitting in the body shop for a long length of time, and like you said, they prob. disconnected the bat.

If I was missing one wire connection, I wouldn't have been able to exceed 100 mph up hill with two other bodies in the ride! I think she's comming back to life!
