engine vin codes

97 4.6. When I call around parts stores, they ask me if I have a '6 code, or a W code. Mine is a W I found out. Just wondering what is the difference? I am assuming it would be which plant it was built in? Curious to know what the deal is when it comes to parts. Are you supposed to specify the code if the parts guy doesn't ask? Are there really different parts and specs? Thanks for any insight, may help a problem. R.K.

There are some basic engine parts that are different. Off the top of my head; Valve covers & gasket, Cam sprocket, Cam bearing cap, timing chain, timing chain guide, Flex plate or flywheel, Crank bearing cap, Piston pins.

The Canadian Tire chain of part stores needs to know your engine size to look up wiper blades. It is simply the way the computer is set up. It may be annoying but is is a safeguard built in to avoid you taking home the wrong part.
