That's the beauty

of a big engine and heavy truck. I've got an '03 5.4L SCab FX4 that seems to get between 14-16. It's gonna take some gas to move that weight around, and I'm not sure you can do much about it

FWIW, my '97 Expy, 5.4L gets 16 mpg, hwy, downhill with a tailwind! I got 8-9 mpg last summer pulling my 19' travel trailer.

Try to watch how much you get into the throttle. Maintain all fluid levels, and try not to overrev the engine. Perhaps consider getting an open filter intake like the AF1 or K&N. These will help with horsepower and torque, as well as mileage if you keep out of the gas.

Besides basic driving techiniques, fuel mileage improves with the following mods: open up the intake, exhaust, bed cover, and superchip.

Cool

Electric fans and the under drive pulleys will definitely help in the MPG department...

B as in B, S as in S...not buying it. I can't get that without a trailer and an empty box!

19 MPG's pulling a trailer??????? As stated above.....highly unlikely. Best I've ever gotten was 17 without trailer and with torneau cover, K&N FIPK, & Gibson Dual Exhaust.

And the electric fans will help mileage too.

I have the poor man's intake mod which doesn't seem to do much, and a soft bed cover. There is a difference of about 1mpg when I have the cover on vs. off. My brother has a 97 5.4L and got a cap last fall and noticed about 1.5-2mpg on the highway better. I still have the stock exhaust and no superchip. Some day.... Freeing up the intake and exhaust will not only provide more power, but can improve mileage as long as you aren't always using that extra power.

It is winter now and the mid-west uses reformulated gasoline which does not have the energy content and we all get 1-2mpg less. My wife has been getting about 11mpg vs. 13 in the summer on the same type of driving. The best I have gotten was 16.5 at about 70-75mph highway speeds, no A/C, and the bed cover on. But I have a 5.4L with 3.73 gears. I get 15mpg at 80-90mph with an extra 2000lb of extra load - I cannot complain. It is a truck and does everything I ask of it with the only cost being gas.

Sell your truck and buy a Geo!

Keep the tires inflated to the proper pressure, and depending on what you are using your tuck for, you can change your rear end ratio.

Yeah, down hill in a hurricane with a tail wind!

There is only one proven known way:
Hook a trailer to it and have medic's friend drive it for you.
