Angry Ignition Coils

F150 5.4 Liter

Why am I having to replace so many coils on my engine. In the last 2 years I have replacd 4. In the last 4 months, 2 have been replaced. Thanks to Auto Zone and their free diagnostics, I have saved money as far as what failed.

Is there something else I should be looking at?

What code are you getting? Why are you replacing the coils? Have you tested the coils before replacing them?

In addition to what the others have said, where are you buying your coils. Are they brand names. AutoZone doesn't always provide the best quality on parts. Good luck.

Question

You say you've had 4 of the 8 Ign. coils replaced, but are they different ones each time or the same one ? I have seen a few Ign. coils going bad on the '97, 5.4 with high mileage. JMC-- with the OBDII, the PCM will store a missfire code pertaining to which cylinder that is missfiring. if it is the same Ign. coil, then you need to look further into what may be causing them to malfunction, such as water/coolant shorting it out (as mentioned) or trying a different brand.

I would still like to know why the coils are being replaced. Just because the Misfire code is present doesn't automaticaly condem the coil. P0300 is Random misfire and P0301 through P0310 identifies which cylinder is misfireing. One of the tests to perform is a coil test. Has this been done?

coils #1,5,7 and 4 these have been replaced at the dealer after a lot of engine testing. my 5.4 has 40,000 miles on it and this started at 34,000 while it was still under factory warranty.

97 5.4 Liter Ignition Coil

Yes, I have replaced 4 since I have had the truck. The first one was #4 below the heater hose. Before I got smart, I had to replace a 2nd one within 2 weeks. They were Ford original equipment replacements. The 3rd was #7 coil. I purchased from Car Quest. It was labeled Ford O E. The 4th was # 5 coil. I purchased from Auto Zone because they were close. Auto Zone was not as cheap as Car Quest because of a discount I can get.
Each time except the 3rd, an analyzer told me what was happening. The 3rd time seemed like the symptom was the same as 1 and 2. When I started checking the coils for misfire, I just unplued each coil one at a time. I found #7 was misfiring. Replaced the coil and problem went away.
To clear the computer I just unplugged the battery overnight and the code was cleared. Yes, it works on my truck.
The last 2 coils failed while acclerating from cruising speed to passing.
Are the coils a weak link in this ignition system or is there something else happening? I do have over 156k miles.

Love my F150 anyway.

it sounds as if your computer may need to be diagnosed

Same prob here. 97 5.4 with 110,000 miles. My coils have started failing. It starts only under high torque and seems to do ok at idle but then gets worse from there. My third coil is now going bad.

Looks like the two guys that have been having coils fail both seem to have over 100k miles, could the coils only have a life expectancy of around 100k? Just thought it was odd that everyone with muliple failing coils seems to have over 100k. I my self have had I think two coil packs fail on me since I first bought my truck in 97 and it was always the same one which happend to be the passenger side rear where the engine coolant or A/C condensor leaked on it . I had a loose hose one time which caused the coolant to leak all over the plug.
