2001 f150 4.6l v8
2001 f150 4.6l v8
I was wondering if anyone can help me? I have a 2001 f150 supercab longbox with a approx. 23000 km on the engine. It developed a oil leak a couple of 1000 km ago and was taken in for service. Apparently there is a problem with the head on these engines and under warranty the head was replaced. My problem is now my fuel mileage has gone to heck and I am going through oil. My mileage used to be about 650 to 750 km per tank, now I am lucky to get 400 to 450 km per tank. After numerous trips back to the dealer who serviced the vehicle they can find nothing wrong. I am also burning oil at about 1 litre per 700km in a vehicle that never used oil before at all. If anyone else out there has had this problem I would appreciate any solution that you found to this problem.
Thanks
Thanks
Well, I had the same problem 4.6L(Romeo), 2000. Started at about 23K - smelled oil. Oil usage got real bad. Based on info from this forum, crawled underneath and saw head gasket leak(passenger side). Head and a zillion gaskets replaced at 28K. Rough idle immediately after repair that continues today (50K now). Ran smooth as silk before repair. Gas mileage dropped off slightly but not as much as yours. Bought extended warranty because ford wanted to shaft me on a trade and I didn't want a new larger note. Felt as if I was legally robbed, and still do. I hope this thing blows up before the warranty runs out so that I get my warranty money cost back for a few more miles and forde has to eat it. I won't even go into the other 4 things that had to be fixed under warranty or recall.
Funny thing, I like everything about this truck except that it is a piece of s***. Very Seriously debating buying something different the next time.
Good luck.

krusty,
From the great book pp303-00
Oil use is normally greater during the first 16,100 km (10,000 miles) of service. As mileage increases, oil use generally decreases. Vehicles in normal service should get at least 1,450 km per liter (900 miles per quart) after 16,000 km (10,000 miles) of service. High speed driving, towing, high ambient temperature and other factors may result in greater oil use.
I would suggest going back to the dealer and asking for an oil consumption test.

Thanks for the info. Prior to the head being changed out though the truck used next to no oil. (maybe 1/2 litre between oil changes) The next thing I am starting is a oil consumption test with the dealership. This still doesn't explain the poor fuel mileage which with the price of fuel today is going to put me in the poor house quick. My fuel mileage prior to head change was 14L per 100km it now is 22-24L per 100 km.
