Hey, Hapynzap

Hap,

Did you get that Flex-a-lite electric fan in yet? I've got a bone stock '98 4.6L and I think my first "mod" will be electric cooling fan(s).

I'd like the extra Hp, But I can justify the expense if it yeilds 1.5 to 2.5 MPG.

Have you had enough time to notice any POWER Improvment? Have you kept track of your MPG. What kind of gains, if any, did you get regarding Power or MPG's?

TIA for your help,

Bill

Bill,

When I did the calculations on 1.5 mpg increase the cost of gas at the time, and the miles per year that I drive, it was just a little over 3 years payback on the cost of the FAL fan kit ( 38 months ? ), without taking into account cost of money ( what you would loose in interest from the money not sitting in the bank ).

This will flux a bit, given gas prices, and how many miles you drive per year.

I did the cost justification, to see what the outcome was.
Now with all the other mods, I don't think I am seeing my 1.5 mpg increase anymore, as I cannot always keep my foot out of it

If I was really concerned about mpg then I guess I should have bought a hybird car....NOT !

Scully,

A hybrid car. What's that a ricer pulled by a mule? (a horse/donkey hybrid)

Thanks for your input. Now I just have to decide which Fan(s) Derale, FAL, Flex a Lite, etc.

YES!

I got my Flex-a-lite and it's sitting in my hallway along with a new 2 row radiator. When I was sizing up the job I noticed I only had the one row (1 inch radiator) so I'm going to upgrade that too all at the same time.

Since I'm gonna bite the bullet big time on this cooling package I went ahead and ordered new top and bottom motorcraft radiator hoses and a new motorcraft thermostat too (UPS delivered yesterday). I still have to get a hunk of hose to replace the overflow tank hose. Hopefuly next weekend I'll make a day job out of it. The new radiator looks sweet and I'm going to see if I can mount the flex-a-lite to it and drop the whole thing in at once. I'll try and take some pictures.

After all this I got interested in what my (98 Mustang GT had since I never paid attention before and it too has only a 1 row radiator and one electric fan set up. This makes me think that this new set up with two fans and two row radiator is going to be plenty. Considering my truck is almost 5 years old now I figure this is a good investment. Here in Arizona you have to be prepared for the extreme summer heat and a trip across the desert in 113* heat or sitting in traffic at rush hour with over 100, 100* days here.

It's a dry heat, heh

btw - It was 82 today and we went to the Renaissance Faire in shorts. heh

I hope we get a little bit more of the cold weather - it's supposedly still winter. Maybe the ground hog will tell us tomorrow.

Ouch!!...Hap,

That really hurt! I'm green with envy and blue from the cold. I don't think we've been above 35* up here in New York for the past 10 days.

I know, from you're previious posts, that you've been keeping close track of you're MPGs. I'd really appreciate you're letting me know if you're electric fan install makes a differance. Would you post you're actual miles driven and gallons used before and after the installation?

I know I'll get better A/C performance. (This NYC traffic in July and August can be a Bi#@h) But I'd like to see actual MPG gains to justify the expense and the risk.

TIA for your help,

Bill

I'll have some pretty good milage figure *before*

as for the AFTER - That'll take about a full month to get a good read. I want to chart it over 4 to 5 tankfuls. Total miles and total gallons.

Single tank fillup MPG can be deceiving.
