5.4 oil consumption

5.4 oil consumption
I have a 2000 F-150 extended cab with the 5.4 and auto trans. I bought this vehicle used with 23,000 miles from a dealer. Everything about the truck seems fine, it runs good, and gets decent gas mileage. What bothers me is the fact that I am burning almost a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. This seems kind of extreme. Makes me worried that the people who owned the truck before me might have beat it up. Anybody out there seeing oil consumption like this? I tried to do a search on this topic but did not have much luck.
Thanks for the help.

I have a 2000 4x4 Off road and with a 5.4 engine. It uses about 1 and one half ouarts of oil every 3000 miles. I was concerned about this and had and oil consumption test done by the dealer and they determined this was not excessive. The truck now has 28,000 miles and runs great and I never have had any trouble.

How many miles have you driven it? That is a very low milage truck for a 2000. What is the mfg date? I would think it was more likely not broken in well (too gently), driven on short trips where the engine does not get up to operating temp, and driven too softly.
What do the tires and brakes look like? Many times you can tell a lot about how it was driven by the tires and brakes. Are there groves in the disks? Are the tires rounded and wore, or do they look more like they have 15,000 miles of wear? It' hard to beat a truck that hard in 20000 miles, and not have the tires and brakes show it.
My 99 SuperCab 5.4 used no oil. I drove it to 24000. My 01 SuperCrew 5.4 has 1,500 miles on this oil, and is up to full at 30500.
I had only one car that used a lot of oil. It was an extremely low mileage vehicle when I bought it. 32000 miles at 8 years old. The good news it, the oil usage got better with more miles.
Have you ruled out oil leaks?

Greencrew,
I bought the truck with 22,900 in November (2002). I have put about 5,500 miles on it since then. The truck does not look completely beat, but does not look like someone took care of it either. Lots of little scratches around the top / outside of bed. Decent amount of tiny scratches. The dealer had done a thorough check on the vehicle when they got it and changed the oil. I changed it agagin 3000 miles later. What concerned me a little bit is the presence of sludge (looked like thicker, stickier, old oil) on the inside of the oil fill cap. It was not really thick, but definitely noticeable. This makes me wonder if the goon who ownded the truck before me ever changed the oil.
As far as the tires (Goodyear Wranglers), they look OK. About what you would expect from them with 28,000 miles. I have not had the wheels off to look at the breaks, but from what I can see through the holes in the wheels, the discs look good.
I am gettting ready to have the oil in the transmission flushed and I will see how bad the trans looks. Hopefully my oil consumption is just characteristic of this engine and not a sign of abuse from the previous owner. When I carfaxed my truck it did say Lease Registration Found and Commercial Registration Found. I hope that is not part of the problem.
