4.6 Getting 25+ Miles Per Gallon!

My 4.6 V8, with a 3.08 tall rear-end, is getting great gas mileage!!

This is a 36 mile trip up the freeway that I make quite often and I have driven it LOL style (little Old Lady) at 70 mph. And I have driven it with spurts from 70 up to 90 and back to 80. So, I get between 22.9 and 26.7 miles per gallon. If I drive at 75 and keep the gas peddle really steady I get 25.1.

Of course, around town and driving normally on back roads in town and out of town I average 16.7 mpg. So, I don't get 25 unless I am on the freeway driving LOL.

My Ford Service Manager says guys come in there all the time complaining about their gas mileage. He say with a 3.53, 3.73 or 4.11 rear-end ratio, you aren't going to get the best gas mileage.
It's impossible. You can't have your Kate and Edith too.

The more I think of the gear swap the better it sounds. The biggest reason I have a truck is to hall my motorcycle around. Do you think you'd feel comfortable with those gears and an extra 1000 lbs? Usually when I put it in the back the trip will be over 500 miles. Would it be rough on the tranny to pull that kind of weight around with such tall gearing?
Right now I have the 4.6 with the 3.55's.

I think the best way to chart gas milage is over a long period of time you keep track of all your miles and gallons. Say for 5 to 10,000 miles. Those average numbers don't lie.

I have a '97 F-250 LD X-cab 4X4, 4.6, auto, with 3.73 gears, almost 106,000 on the odometer, and last summer on trips where I could set the cruise, I was getting consistent 19.5 - 20.5 MPG. I was checking the in-town MPG and it was averaging around 14. I had a co-worker say I could not be getting that mileage, so we rode together on a trip, and he was amazed, we got a little over 19.8 on the trip (cruise was set just over 72 or so). I don't even bother to check during the winter time, but I am vey pleased.
Love the truck!

With the start of the new year I'm starting to chart my milage. The one thing I notice though is that depending on how I fill the tank the volume of fuel can vary. I can squeeze in up to another 1.5 gallons from when it clicks off on autofill. That variable can make the results vary, IMO. My last tank I got 372 miles on 24 gallons of regular city driving with mixed in short freeway trips.
I have the 30 gallon tank.
