Update: Strange Noise Upon Shutdown

This is an update to this thread:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...hreadid=103450

Took it to the dealer and the mechanic heard the noise immediately. He removed the PCV valve and had me do the start up and shutdown ignition. When the PCV valve was removed from the valve cover the noise was GONE upon shutdown which is when when the noise would occur. He replaced the PCV valve with a new one placed it back in the valve cover and the noise returned upon shutdown.

I had to leave the truck overnight for a more thorough assesment in the AM . The mechanic was a bit stumped but could not or did not spend an enormous amount of time diagnosing it other than the PCV valve replacement test/removal.

He said there was a TSB out for the line freezing up but was addressed by having a foam sleeve put over the line which was done at the factory for the 2002's.

Any ideas???? Anyone???? Why would it stop upon removal of the PCV valve? When putting the valve back in the valve cover the noise returned

Obviously it sounds like there is pressure being relieved at some point and by removing the PCV valve you released from there rather than where the noise is coming from. Have you tried pulling the 4 bolts that hold that plastic cover down over your throttle body? It would make it easier to hear if the sound was coming from that area or not and it's very easy to do. As far as the line freezing goes, were they referring to the PCV line or something different? I would find it hard to believe the PCV line would freeze shut. That's a fairly good size hose I.D. to be blocked in that manner but stranger things have problaby happened. Please keep us posted as to the resolution of your problem.

Yes, he was referring to the PCV line believe it or not. My 02 has a foam sleeve over the PCV line/tube seemingly to alleviate the problem. I founf it strange too but didn't question him. I will keep everyone posted tomorrow when I call them and find out what the heck is going on. Very frustrating.....especially since I am driving a freakin Focus and I live in freakin Buffalo, NY and it's Winter. I sure would like to have my Offroad right now (althouth maybe I should be lucky the dealer gave me a car at all)

Re: Was'nt there another thread ran...

Well, I started a thread earlier about the problem and asked if anyone had any ideas. I then started this thread as an Update after visiting the dealer. The noise, no doubt is coming from the PCV valve area. When the valve was removed the noise disappeared. A new valve was installed and it happened again. I will know more tomorrow. Keep in mind this was all done in the parking lot with a mechanic.....and I really didn't have an appointment per se. So he wants to keep it overnight and give it his full attentionin the AM.

I thought I was going to look like an idiot if they had fixed it with my suggestion after you wrote this.lol

I just posted the answer to your dilema in your other post/topic.

It's from the egr regulator valve.

I saw your post. Thank you very much. Certainly makes sense and it is coming from that area just as you describe. I wonder why that mechanic never heard of this before???? It seems to me that it would be a common complaint or problem. I have to call them in a couple hours and I will mention this to them. Thanks again for the info and help.

I don't work on cars or trucks, but I'm a mechanic. Sometimes being the owner, we hear more than we need too.lol

I work on Cummins and MAN diesel engines. I'm going deaf, and could hear the EGR regulator valve. It sounds like a bearing going and was nerve racking the first time I heard it and then tried to find it.

The PCV was an obvious replacement, but unfortunately it still did it.

I have the same issue with mine but do you know if it's truly a problem or just an annoying sound some of us experience with these models?

I just called the dealer and the mechanic is still working on it. I mentioned the "egr reg. valve" but not sure if he is checking that out. The mechanic seemed pretty confident that this noise SHOULD NOT be happening so I don't know what to think. We'll see and I will keep everyone posted as the day progresses.

Thanks for the input and participation from everyone.

Well here's the deal Dealer checked EVERYTHING over, replaced the PCV valve, double checked all systems, called Ford Tech Support, and then started a brand new one with the same driveline and they stated the new one did the same thing. So basically they can't find anything wrong with it and it is a noise that is within normal operation.

Although they would not say that there wasn't anything wrong that will pop up in the future, simply because they couldn't find out why the noise was happening.

My 99 with the identical driveline did not make this noise. Sooooooooooooooooo, time will tell I guess.
