Question Where to install Water/Tranny sending units?

I’ve got a 97 F150 with the 5.4 and E4OD tranny. I’ve searched and read all the posts on the various locations where to mount the sending units, but I can’t seem to nail down a post that has my exact year and drivetrain.

Just got my two pod A-Piller mount and Auto Meter Water/Tranny temp gauges. (electric ones, and I know that the mechanicals are more accurate, but got what I got, which is better then what I have now

Not too much on engines about where to install the water temp. I found where the stock sending unit is and did find some posts that say there is another plug near it and the thermostat housing, but I don’t see that on mine.

I’ve checked for the tranny line port or the lines for it, but I don’t think I have the same deal. At least I can’t see it under there. (drivers side, just above the pan, next to the linkage). There is a very small bolt that extends out from the case, but just looks like another mounting point for the linkage. Not an actual port “into” the tranny. Anyplace else on the E4OD that I can tap into? I’d prefer not to tap into the pan or the lines if I can help it.

Sorry about the double question in “Engines”, when I probably should ask the tranny Q in “Transmissions”, but just starting here first.

TIA!

Tranny Port - think that's it. Is it right above the pan, maybe an inch or so? Mine looked the same although I have the 4R70W. It just looked like another bolt head. There should be the word "Line" written somewhere near it, at least it was on mine.

I put mine in the pressure port, too and I have the 4R100 (same as the E4OD). For the water, there is a plug on the left hand side of the block that can be used. There was a picture of it in MM&FF a couple of months ago.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info guys and thanks Neal for the pics.

Looks like I'm going to have to tap into the line for the tranny..... I just don't have that pressure port everyone else seems to have. I guess since my tranny is not officially a 4r100, but the e4od, that must be just enough of a difference.

I like the idea of tapping into the heater hose for the water temp.

One additional question Neal.... I know that must be the inlet hose for the heater, but is it the same hose that goes into the rear of the intake that shows on your pic? Or is it the 'other' one?

Thanks again.

HI!... MitchF150 : Yes the probe needs to be "T"ed" into the "outgoing" coolant line from the ENGINE. Next to the intake manifold on the passenger's side you will see a steel tube bent in a 90 degree. The hose coming from that tube is the one you want to "T" into. That pic I posted is about 2 years old. Since then I have cut the 90 degree part of the tube off and just left the tube sticking straight up. I shortened that heater hose a ton. It now is only about 4" long. I also shortened the other heater hose as well. This helps greatly when trying to do a sparkplug change.
