Question air intake mod

I would like to replace the stock air intake system on my 92 f-150. It looks like my engine is not getting enough air. My intake is very small at the opening and I was wondering if I cut it out and put in a universal K&N filter would I be better off leaving the filter open or get some sort of pipe to direct the air flow to it.

You can replace the stock air cleaner with K&N just be conservative on the re-oils down the road. This will flow air better and you can re-use the filter. Also as said on here many times you can remove the tube section from the filter housing through the inner fender well and put in a 3 inch to 3-inch rubber plumbing adaptor. It does not seal perfectly but does well enough to get the cooler fender air. This opens up the stock 2-inch restriction, to the full 3 inches of the rest of the intake system. Also many oh here, cut the filter housing cover down, and completly expose the filter element like a FIPK does. These mods are much cheaper than a complete FIPK, and probably would get you to within 2 or 3 hp of what you would gain from any FIPK. Now if you have the money and want the extra couple HP, many swear by the various FIPK too.:o
