Please Help - 97 4.2L - hard starting

I hope someone can help me with one of the first real problems I have had with my 97 4.2l F150 with 57,500 (timing gasket recall performed at about 38,000).

The problem goes like this...

Once in a blue moon I would get an occasional 2-3 second sputter/rough start (mostly when engine is cold). I've basically tolerated this for as long as I've owned the truck (I bought it used in 99 with 30,000 on it).

Lately though, it doesn't want to start at all unless I crank it several/many times. Warm or cold makes no difference, and it seems to be getting progressively worse. It cranks like the devil and will eventually start and run fine, but it may be 7-8 cranks later. I almost thought it maybe had something to do with the ignition switch, but I'm not so sure now.

I don't trust the truck right now, so I won't take it anywhere until it's right. Thanks in advance for any light you can shine my way!!!

97 4.2L Hard Starting

Sorry, I cannot comment on the problem you are having. I have not experienced starting problems with my 97 4.2L which I purchased new and now has 100,100 miles.

However, in your letter you stated there was a recall on the gasket for the timing chain cover. I have not heard anything about this recall and had the gasket replaced at 71,000 miles (4 years).

Can you pass on any information on the recall.

Wayne,

I had the Engine Front Cover Gasket replaced at 42,000 (Oct 2000) under my ESP warranty, according to the service receipt. The work is shown as cause/concern code 99B29. I dont remember the details, but Ford came to me and told me that I needed the work done (I think I got a letter). So, it was some kind of recall/TSB that may have cost me the $431.00 shown on the ticket if I didn't have the ESP warranty. Sorry, that's all I know about it. Good LucK.

For those who might be interested in following this thread to it's end...

I have another thread with the same title as this one running in the "V-6 Engine" message forum on this site. Thanks.
