Starter problems
Starter problems
I went thru some high water a while back and now the bendix on the starter seems to be hanging up on me. On cool mornings the starter whines and the engine starts and then dies. After the second or third try it usually fires right up. Is there a greasing procedure for the bendix shaft. I did not find anything in the manual. Do I need to pull the starter and does anyone know what that involves on these trucks? Used to be a fairly easy job on my 71' Goat. As many off roaders as we have on this site I figure somebody has a good idea on what this entails.

What year truck? I used to run mud trucks, and I could figure on a starter a season. Don't know why but that's the way it was. The bendix would hang up and all i would get is the starter free-wheeling(really makes you mad). I could usually get it to loosen up with a couple of hits with a hammer(sometimes to hard). This was on an older big block Ford. I don't know if the newer ones do the same or not, I haven't had the opportunity to take the newer one off the road much.
Well good luck,
Mike

The starters on the newer style F-series are junk...I have a '97 off road and I put 5 on it so far. They are a simple fix . The + end on it from the battery corrodes and doesnt let the proper contact to be made....I would take it apart and clean it real good...then put it back togeather....good luck
It is a 1998 4.6 liter 5 speed. Thanks for the input, I'll give it a try and let ya' know how it goes. Doesn't look as like as bad a job as I thought after I crawled under there and looked around a little bit.
