4.6 cuts out / hesitates
I have a '99 F150 with a 4.6 Triton and I'm having problems while running. Usually more noticable when at cruising speeds, as the transmission shifts to a higher gear maybe before it should. I hit the gas to get the transmission to downshift, and the engine begins cutting out / jerking/ hesitating. The truck still runs, and doesn't do this constantly, but it's doing it enough now to make me a little nervous. I've got almost 50,000 miles on it currently. Any suggestions on what to check? I don't have any start up problems or idle problems yet. Any ideas from the experts?
thanks everyone!

Two things you should do immediately if they haven't been done yet, are a fuel filter change, and a complete recirculatory transmission flush. That would knock out any common possible problems that could cause this. Also, check the air filter as they get overlooked sometimes. They can choke off air if left in too long. Is there a CE light coming on during this problem? ,,,,98
Thanks 98Screamer
There has not been any warning lights come on so far. I'll see about the trans fluid and the fuel filter. Maybe this will help. Can't hurt, except the wallet!
Yeah, I hear you. I have not taken this truck in for anything (other than an oil change) where it has not been at least $150. Good luck finding the trouble. Try the fuel filter first, it's cheaper

I just had the same problem about a week ago It was the #4 coil pack and plug. It cost me 276.00 to fix at the dealership.
At first around town no light then about 30 miles out on the highway the ce light flickered on and off and then stayed on until I took it in for service. I drove it over 100 miles til I got it home. no other guages showed a problem and unless it gets hot or loses oil pressure I'm not stoppong for nothing that far from home
There are other threads about misses on this site but thats what mine was and it runs great now.

I don't remember the actual date, but up to somewhere between 01 or 02, all 4.6 only had two coils, the 5.4 has always had the Coil On Plug ignition I think.,,,,98

My 2001 built in 2000 4.6 has a coil pack on each plug
my problem started the same way when the first one went. My light didn't come on for a week. Mine was # 8 the hardest to get to. I had new plugs and one coil pk plus oil change at independent garage and it cost $214.00. the price difference between dealer and after market coil pk (both motorcraft)was $15.00. My labor was $ 30 to install it.
