OBD2 code P0455

Hi all

I had my check engine light turn on last weekend. I finally got my hands on a OBD2 scanner. The scanner gives me a Power Train fault# 455. Which is "Evaporative Emission Leak Detected(Large Leak). I looked inside the Haynes Manual and it does not have any info on this.

I need to know what to do to fix this fault. Anyone have any info? My 4.2 is stock at 48,000 miles. The only thing I have done recently is change the Spark plug and oil at 45,000 miles.

Also, I had my check engine light go on at 10k miles and 30k miles and checked under warranty. They told me both times it was my gas filler cap not being tight enough. The last time the service tech told me my cap was the one that give only 1 snap when closed and it was one that was harder to tell if its closed.
The service tech wrote up it was a possible loose fuel cap. This tends to happen only when the weather is cold.

Any help would be appreciated

i too have a amozon green 99 v-6 5- speed and this past summer my light went on and Norristown ford told me that the fuel filler pipe had a crack in it where the cap sits on the neck.

It cost over 300 since it was out of warrenty.

Not the same here

Schoolbus

I dont think I have the same problem. I found out it only occurs at temp of 40F or lower and only certain orientations the gas cap is installed. My problem is related to the seal of the gas cap. I will probably have to just pick up a new one.

Angry

I too have a 97 F150 V6 5 speed, and I have gotten that code three times in about 1 months. 1st time had it cleared, it came back, took it to the dealer, they said the gas cap was bad ($14), and $70 to clear the code. About 2 weeks later it comes on again, had it checked again, same dame code, so I had it cleared again. (mine is the one click gas cap too, I've tryed to turn it more, but just one click is all it has)

I'm so mad right now I've stopped driving the darn thing!! I'm about ready to put our winter car back on the road (84 BMW 733i) so it will sit till the lease is over with is in Jan 2003. I'm not going to let this thing nickel and dime me to death in the last 2 months of the lease.

Autozone scanner pulled the P0455 today for me. The tech there also just happens to work for Ford.

He said it can be a gas cap but rarely is. He could only recommend having Ford smoke the system to find the leak.
Something about a proprietary ford valve going bad.

Update.....

Ford checked things out.....

The tech forgot to connect a vacuum line when they installed my remanufactured engine. The purge valve only operates when the gas tank is less then 3/4 full. My tank has been pretty full lately so it took about 500 miles after the engine install for the problem to show up.

This vacuum line connection is located just to the left of the master brake cylinder on the firewall.

I have narrowed it down to the gas cap.

This happends only when the cap is oriented in 1 of the 3 possible positions and when the tempurature goes below 50 degrees F.
