Angry oxygen sencer ? 97 4.2 v6

i replaced my engine last week and just took it in for the 500 mi check. i also had to get the e. manafold machined to get a tight seal. it was test driven for about a half an hour, then i got in and drove a block and the check engine lght came on, so i turned around and went back to the shop... he said it was probably the "oxygen sensor's " since it was replaced for a liquid lock up theyprobably have antifreeze on them..im going back mon. to find out exactly what the problem is.... my question is , does that sound right? if thats whats wrong can they dry by themself or by a person, do i have to replace them.....if they will dry by themselfs , how long might it take? if anyone thinks they can help its greatly appreciated....thanks

Probably an oxygen sensor You tell a rather confusing story. You went in 500 miles after the rebuild.... Drove around the block after it was checked and the MIL came on then???

I suppose it's possible but I've never heard of antifreeze damaging an O2 Sensor.

I'd suspect that since they would have removed the engine for rebuild or replacement, they probably didn't hook up a sensor properly. Could be any one of the sensors really. Not necessarily an O2 sensor.

Rather than going on and on about all of the possible causes, just go to your local Autozone, or whomever you have there and have them pull the code so you know.

If you have a code for an O2 sensor, don't just replace it. Considering that he exhaust manifolds have been removed and reinstalled, they may be leaking. This would set a code. What you can do is connect a multimeter to the O2 sensors and see if they are switching, warming up, etc... If an O2 sensor gives an erratic reading, it is likely fouled. If it reads a steady voltage, then it is likely accurate and sensing problems.

To BLUEOVALFITTER about his 97

I'm interested in knowing what you may know about the front cover gasket recall of DEC 99. Have you the 4.2L v6? I'm guessing you work for FORD as a mechanic? If so, check out the posts on the front cover gasket recall #99B29.

Thanks and good luck with your 97
