my truck with a 4.2 liter sometimes sounds like an electric fan is kicking on when I start it up first thing in the morning, any ideas?

Maybe its an electric fan?

Don't these new 4.2s use an electric cooling fan?

No the 4.2 liter still has a fan off of the front of the engine!

If it happens when the engine is cold (first start) then it could be the clutch of the fan engaging and causing alot of fan noise. If the sound goes away in a few minutes or after the engine warms up the fan clutch is the source but there is no problem. The sound should increase with motor speed.
