power tower
what it does it pushes more air in and it goes in at the nd of your intake where it goes into your engine, my cousin has a 2001 ranger edge 4by4 with the 4.0l auto, and has 40 series flowmaster, jet chip, kandn generation 2 and power tower and the tower made a huge difference, i drove it before and after the tower and it helps a lot, the only bad thing is it makes a sucking noise when you romp on it and sounds like a whitsle but it still helps, and what is that other intake you guys are suggesting for a 4.2l??

Airraid - Get a MAC air intake, its cheeper and you get the same thing
Flowmasters - Go with flow 50's but dont dual the exaust or change the diameter up to the muffler
Helix Power tower - TB Spacers are useless on a 4.2, get underdrive pullies instead or some electric fans. (About where I am on the mod list at the moment, I have plenty of power, and the truck is fun to drive, but drag/street racing is out of the question, unless of coarse you like being passed by cheby's)
Cheep mods but time expensive.
Port polish and halfshaft the TB
Port and polish valves
Mill heads for higher compression
Port and polish exaust ports
Expensive mods
Nitrous 50+ shot depending on your engine mods
Install a supercharger
new Cam, better pistons/rods
better roller rockers/valves/valve springs
umm did i miss anything, well thats a good start at least
these boards have a vast wealth of information for you to look at. if you go to the computerchip section you will see that the superchip seems to be the chip chosen by the majority of people for more reasons than i have the time to list.
as far as air intakes...i do not see a very large difference in any of them. just make sure you get one is what i would recomend. i personally went with the AF-1.
as far as exhaust i would go with something that does not loose low end tourque (something that is already lacking in our 4.2's). i would go with a magnaflow exhaust if i could do it over again. it sapposedly does not loose tourque at ANY rpm. i have heard nothing but good things about it and i think it looks sharp.
after that there are other things, but take care of "the big three" first, then make an assessment of weather or not you want/need to proceed with the performance enhancements. good luck.

RedFlarside2000,
i did a quick search and they seem to be just another form of a throttle body spacer. so bassically they do not work or provide significant improvement in our trucks. i would not waste my money on one.
