Question 98 XL Tach ?

I just bought a gauge cluster from a 97 expo on ebay. everyone is telling me it will hook right up. But will the tach work? If not I guess I will turn around and sell it.

I am thinking of also buying a gauge cluster with a tach. Is there anyway to change the mileage on the one I buy to match my truck's mileage?

found this in a tech article at f150world.net. He was trying to add a tach to his 99 XL.

"I first decided to replace the instrument cluster but with a cost of almost $400.00 plus labor and the PAT’s system to be reprogrammed for an addition of a tachometer"

Maybe one of you guys can confirm that the PAT's system either will or won't need to be reprogrammed. FWIW!!

Passive Anti-Theft system. There's a chip in the key that has to match the code in the PAT's transponder. If it doesn't, the truck will shut down. My 99 has it. I'm not sure if earlier years do too.

gauge cluster

It will work if the clusters came out of the same engine vehicle, V6 to V6, V8 to V8. other than that you should not have any problems. I did the same swap a while back on my 98 V6, and no problems. It's been in over 3 yrs. only I paid $60 from a local used parts supplier. Good luck. Oh, you can roll the miles higher but not lower without breaking the litte teeth on each number.

I know the '97 4.2 XL series does not have the PAT on the key. (That is if your '97 is still functioning properly)
