I locked my key's up!

Today as I was just getting ready to get out of my truck, I was fiddling with my cd player trying to extract a cd. Well, after I got the cd out, I left my key's in the ignition. And they were still in the acc. position. Then like a dumba$$, I locked and shut my door. Fortunatley, I have Ventshade Ventvisors, and I alway's leave my windows open about an inch. So, painfully I peeled my driver's side ventvisor off, and proceeded to try to catch the inside door handle with a carefully bent clothes hanger. Well, I slipped it through the window (during a hard rain I might add. ) and tried several times to grab the handle. I could get the hook part of the hanger on it. But everytime I'd pull it, the hook would bend and let go. I made several attempts at this, but the rain kept on getting worse an worse. So here I was, all humiliated and aggrevated to death!. So I thought, Why not make a loop in the end part of the hanger so it will not slip off the handle. Guess what? It worked! I'm just glad I did'nt crack my window to pieces with the hanger! Oh, and the dealer only gave me one key when I bought my truck new. That sucks. I fixed the Ventvisor with some 3M doublesided adhesive tape. Now all I have to do is put it back on in the morning. Can a Ford dealer make me a few extra key's? This is rediculous!

sure they can make you extra keys. Most places can. Unless they are the keys with the computer chip in it. Cause then they have to get the exact match for your ignition. My dad's for his ford Explorer cost almost 100 bucks.

next time....

take the coat hanger and bend a 90 degree angle at the bottom with about a 1/2 inch of it at that 90...then with the wire vertical and the 90 at an right angle(looking like a "L") bend the wire about 5 inches up from the bottom away from you to a 20 degree angle...insert wire into door at the area where the corner of the window is or in line with the top door button ...insert till the bent part enters the door and move towards the door edge moving the wire up and down...when you contact the rod for the lock you will see the button jump slightly...just pull up firmly and until the button is extended fully and your in. i average getting someone in thier car about two a week and you,ll be real surprised just how easy these trucks are to get into:(

Peacemaker Jul 28, 2002 11:59 PM

My key is the "coded", computer chip key. $100??? That can't be right. They are crazy as @#*% if they think I'm paying that much for a duplicate key!!! Who does Ford think they're messin' with? A @#$%^&* idiot? :p Sorry for the rant. But this is unbelievable!

They are not quite 100.00 each.

I think mine was 57.00 to have cut, and I programed it myself ( directions in owners manual ).

Same for keyless entry, search through jefflwas posts, and he provided the directions on how to programe these if you got that option.

Also the keypad is the next thing I am looking at adding, I say where this is a sub 200.00 thing to put on, and on the world they have a FAQ on how to add this. The newer ones have the harness in the door, if you have the correct options on the truck ( FAQ shows how to check if it is in there ).

Brand new truck, and you only got 1 key.

You should go back to your salesman, and tell him to buy the 2nd key that Ford sends with the truck from the factory. I have never heard of a new car only comming with 1 key in my life. Maybe holding your wallet when you walk back in the dealer is in order, so they don't pick your pocket again. Must be a MBO fo the dealership <g>

Those smarta$$ car dealers will do anything to make an extra buck! The dealer I got my truck from is over 70 miles away. Do you think a local dealer would do this for me???

SSCULLY Jul 29, 2002 10:44 AM

Cut the PATS key, they should.

When I asked the Sales Rep he told me to take a key to the Parts department, they cut it for me.

He told me RTFM about programming it, I will say that was kind of nice, not having them give me the **** and bull story about it is a difficult programming yadda yadda yadda, 100.00 later.

I am not 100% sure on that cost, I cannot find that reciept to tell you for sure.

I am sure most dealers are similar, just take it to the Parts counter and ask them to cut them.

While you are at it, ask them to cut a regular non-PATS key for the door.
I am the weenie that only has the key and the remote on one, and my house keys, and a spare "door" key on another chain that I keep in my pocket.
That key is onyl good for unlocking the door, nothing else ( on a PATS system that is bad news, your waiting 30 min if you put that one int he ign. <g>). Just a thought on that one, I have yet to need it, but if I did nto get it, I would have needed it already. <g>

Thanks SSCULLY. I'll look into doing that.

Raoul Jul 29, 2002 10:58 AM

Peacemaker, the lesson in all of this is never again buy a
Vehicle
House
Pad Lock
or a Lunch Box

that only has one key.

If whoever is selling wants to make the deal, they will throw in a second key and on a new vehicle there really is no excuse. It had two keys when it left the factory.

I have three keys for my truck. One is on my keyring, one is on my wife's keyring and one is in a magnetic hide-a-key box under the truck.

(The magnet does not adversely affect the the chip in the key)

Does it adversely affect the chip in the truck then ? <g> j/k

Raoul Jul 29, 2002 11:22 AM

I mention that because someone said the magnet on the box might screw things up. So, I crawled up under there, dug out the key and tried it. Truck started and the key had been under the truck for three years.

SSCULLY Jul 29, 2002 11:33 AM

Cannot see how that could happen

It is not a magnetic strip like a credit card, it is embedded with a MAC type addr burnt into a ROM on the key.
That is why the key needs to be programed to the truck, not vice-versa.

I was making a joke more so, but you raise that interesting point of mis-information that floats around from time to time.

Good info if someone had the same question though.

Guess I should not try humor before 5 cups of coffee...<g>

LOL SSCULLY, so I'm on the recieving end for once.

I see that stuff is only funny when I know it's supposed to be and I just get confused when I don't know what's going on.

I was concerned when someone said my plan to thwart getting locked out may be ruined by the magnet so, I checked it out.

I don't know how these keys work but, you already figured that out about me. :D I just know it has a big head and something must be in there. :p

S'CrewLoose Jul 29, 2002 11:50 AM

I bought 2 keys at the local ACE Hardware, They cut them, I programmed them......$21.00 Each including tax.

Peacemaker:

I agree with some of these other guys on here. Your truck should have come with 2 keys from the factory. I would go back to your dealer and demand a second key for FREE or tell them when its time to buy again you'll go elsewhere. What a bunch of s*it they want to charge you for a second key.

Sorry about being a little pissie here just pisses me off we pay a good amount of money for our trucks and then they act like they are doing you one hell of a favor saleing you another key when it was suppose to be free to begin with.

Who knows, somewhere down the line you will sign the papers walk out to the truck and it will only have three tires on it, and they will want to charge you extra for the fourth one
