what do you guys think i will need to win?
hey guys,
alright, i know these posts are common but i have to ask anyways. I have a friend who just got a 01 silverado extended cab 5.3L v8 auto. now he wants to race as do i. but i only want to race when i can beat him. right now i have a superchip, gibson supertruck exhaust, and a AF-1 intake. This weekend I will be installing my ASP crank pulley whic is good for about 8 rwhp. seeing as how i have a manual and not as much drive train loss as him how much more do you think i need? i am thinking that headers and a electric fan settup should be all i need to compliment my current mods to take him down. what do you guys think? just curiouse. thanks for any responses.

Do have the sport package which includes the 3.55 gears? If you have the 3.31 or 3.08... you'll need much more to get him. I beat them stock by about 3 lengths... thats it, both of us with good traction. You really gotta know how to drive the tranny... not hard, but smooth.. you can't be too quick or you'll mess up or you'll be sloppy, it's taken me 8 months of racing every weekend, and alot during the week... I've clocked over 3,000 1/4 passes in my truck already and with that, this is why my clutch went out at 12.5k miles. I've had LOTS of practice and I've got shifting down very well, I'm still working as i'm not an expert yet, but I am very good. I only speed shift into 3rd and that shift is quicker than my 1-2 shift... i used to speed shift into every gear, but this is my 3 tranny internals and i'm tired of breaking them and having to deal with the dealer.
with your mods after the crank pulley, you should run between 16.1 to 15.83 on good shifting and traction. I ran the 15.83 when all i had was the throttle body work, airaid, superchip, glasspack and sloppy shifting with a race weight of 4050lbs. I have not been to the track since... and i've been wanting to go soooo bad since the n2o, I should be mid 15's N/A.
If you got the split bench seat, remove the passenger side seat, jack, spare tire... leave the tail gate for some rear weight, and if you'r really weight savy remove the windshield wiper fluid, pump and container. do that and with your mods and depending if you have 3.55 gears you should be able to pull ahead IF he is stock.

I have a 4X4 4.2 Sport 5 speed with 3.55's (needs 4.10's!!). Several of us at work have different brand trucks all 4X4's. We have a place marked off on the road leaving work and we see how fast we can get (mph) by a determined point. I can abuse a 5 speed with the best of them (I race a 5 speed Mustang on the juice and powershift all gears), but I dont powershift the junk Mazda tranny. Here are our speeds.
My V6-75 mph
98 Chevy ext cab-78
2002 Dodge 4.7 5 speed-70 mph
2000 Chevy 4.8 5 speed-80 mph
2001 Chevy Z71 5.3- 84 mph
I am not saying "no way", but the 5.3's are a good match for a 5.4. I dont imagine a low torque V6 even close. I raced the guy above with the 4.8 5 speed Chevy and we were bumper to bumper until 60 mph . The 5.3 is a ton faster so I wont even try it myself. But hey, Talleywacker has done it so I guess it's possible.

Your going too need more than just that pulley to beat a 5.3L. I say don't waste your time and money because you are going to have to do a lot more to even hang with him. I have a 4.2L with a lot of mods. and I've raced a lot of different cars and trucks, and believe me with those mods. you mentioned on your 4.2L you will lose to him. As for NOS on the 4.2L, you better not go over a 50 shot, because any more than that is going to tear your engine to pieces.

Stupid rain came, so I didn't even bother filling the bottle cuz i know the track was gonna be closed anyway
I've only used 2 bottle so far... 1 bottle with a 25 shot and another bottle with a 75 shot, thats it.
stupid rain.

I have a 5.4L v8 and I have raced many stock 5.3L chevys in my truck. They come really close. MY AF-1 intake helps me off the start. I have a 1998 f-150 stepside. It competes against every chevy out there up to 02, as long as it is stock. I actually have beat a few with some mods as well. Its all about the start, because after that they are pretty much well matched. I am planning on getting the Hpertec programmer, pulleys, dual exhaust, electric fan, headers, and some spacers. Once that is complete I am going to focus on the body a little more.
The 4.2L is 205hp stock, not very impressive for a full size truck, well over 4,000lbs. And you want to race a 5.3L silverado with 270HP stock.....All I have to say is good luck!! Let me know how it goes.
Hey Talley, why all of that on a weak 4.2L? Why not save your self the time and put in a bigger and better engine? If you really care about performance, and by what you said you've done with your 4.2, you obviously do, why not put in a bigger more powerful engine? I mean the 4.2L isn't something most people would try to turn into a high performance machine. As for the NOS with what you've done I say go for it! But I would suggest to anyone considoring NOS on a stock 4.2L, you better gut the engine first because you will tear it to pieces with anything over a 50 shot. The stock gaskets, rods, and heads, also about everything else in the 4.2 are crap. And they will not hold up for too long with large shots of Nos. But there are always those people who will push their engine to the limits, and end up regretting it. But hey, thats just my opinion. Hey Talley what are newbies???

There is no way you can beat a 5.3 unless you have some kind of power adder like a supercharger or nitrous. And Listen to Tally, these engines can handle more than a 50 shot. From diffrent web sites I have read the V6 can handle up to a 100 shot without running lean.
Restridge, the 4.2 is not rated 200 RWHP, its rated 205 flywheel.
And lastly Falcon11, you have the GM engines mixed up. The 4.8 is rated at 270hp, the 5.3 is rated for 285hp

thanks for the replies. i think i need to say "no newbies" when i post my next thread. haha j/k.
how much do you guys think my drive train loss is in comparison to his? he has an auto and i have a manual. i know it won't make the difference for me to win right now...but what i am getting at is i do not have to come up with the full 285 hp to beat a truck that has more drivetrain loss than me as well as more wieght.
so in essence, how much HP do you think i have to come up with total? fly wheel that is. thanks again!
EDIT: but i guess gears do have a lot to do with it. how do i find out what gear i have? if its hard....what would my rpms be at 60 in 5th? (just an easy way to check i figure)

Sorry f150freak i'm not much of a GM/Chevy guy as you might have guessed. Thanks for catching my mistake....I got to ask S/C 4.2L? Why? Why not put in a 4.6 or 5.4 and mod from there? You can make a whole lot more power with Ford's V-8's than their gutless 4.2. And LBC150 I can tell you right now the gears in the 4.2 suck. I know from experience that the 4.2 sucks off the line, I get beat off the line by almost anything and I have a good amount of mods. The gears in a stock 4.2 is 3.08's, sure its fine once you get going, but off the line they suck. You can change it to 4.11's to get some better acceleration off the line, but I think even with that your still going to get beat by that 5.3. But either way Good Luck! let us know what happens.
