I started using 87 because the 89 went up to $1.20 per gallon. 87 octane is alright in my book.

87 is reccommended for my Y2K,
page 271 of the owners manual.

I tried higher octane and didn't notice any significant difference in performance, idle, starts, acceleration, etc.

By a brand name... but why spend more than you need to?

i pumped the 93 or 91 in it for about a month, and saw no diff. so back to the 87 and saving .20 a gallon. it does not sound like much, but you can count off a six pack everytime you fill up(of coke that is )

I used to use 87 i switched to 89 once and noticed that my ole 97 4.2 ran smoother so i just stuck with 89 never tried 91 or 93 but i do like the smoothness of 89 Thats just my opinnion...as for performance or anything like that i noticed nothing.

I pretty much use 87 exclusively. The exception being on a long trip, I will use 93 or 94 as these have all of the added detergents. Run a tank of this in a single day for a long trip and I never have to spend money on a useless fuel injector cleaner service from a mechanic.

But as I said, only doing it for the cleaners that are generally not put into 87 octan.e

I have found it necessary to run 91+ with the superchip, but had no problems on 87 before that.

The trucks were designed for 87 octane. If you don't have significant problems running 87 octane, it is a waste of money to pay for a higher grade.

Also, "detergents" in higher octane gas can actually lead to build up of deposits. Said deposits are what will cause your engine to start to run poorly on 87 octane.

Some (brand x) high octane gas with "detergents" have the same "detergents" that are in all the other octanes of (brand x) gas. I think it's a gov't requirement to put some of those chemicals in there, but don't quote me on that.

Why pay more??

Our fuel went to 83 cents per liter this summer and it will more then likely go back again(and thats for 87 oct)

96 liter tank x .83 per liter = too much money..

I've always read that using a higher octane won't increase performance, and if it's used to stop pinging, then a tune up might be in order... 87 for me ($1.25 a gallon!)

What can you do for a tune up?? Ive changed all plugs and wires on my 4.2 and still pings on anything less than the highest octang. sucks as i would like to use what its supposed to and that is 87. something is wrong with it. Its done it since ive owned it. I dont like the pinging and it cant be good on the motor so thats why i use the high octang. I hope this doesnt couse problems when i supercharge it.
