Can anybody shut these things up?
Hey all,
All and all I like my 6'er, it's been good to me, but holy ***** this thing sounds like a freakin diesel!!
I run mobil-1 in my engine, and I've had it in the dealer twice to see if they can fix it, but they never "hear" it.
Pretty hard to miss if you ask me. I've noticed other 6's around town sound the same. The V8's are quiet as a baby compared to these things! The sound is loudest when it's cold outside and/or the compressor is on. Can ANYONE give some advice as to where this is coming from and/or how to make it quieter?
Thanks,
Chris

OK guys, I've got a solution!!!
Just put these badges on our rides:
"SVT 4.2L Diesel"
Then we can all go around bragging about how we have these special edition trucks that pump out 500hp and 700ft/lbs, and then when someone asks us to pop the hood, just say they are sealed from the factory just like bentleys and ferarris! See I've got it all worked out.....oh well back to my diesel F-150 I guess...

F150forever,
Are you saying that the sound went away after you changed the injectors, or are you just saying that you have had the sound for 18K miles, and it hasn't hurt anything?
Thanks,
Chris

Mine has the ticking sound especially noticeable sitting at a drive through (next to a wall) when warm. Our motor is based on a 3.8 and they say it is a noisy one too. The scary thing is a buddy of mine has a 2001 also with the ticking 4.2 and kept at the dealer until they contacted Ford directly. They instructed the dealership to check crankshaft endplay and it was well out of spec. They are replacing his motor at 9200 miles. I have never heard of excessive endplay causing a ticking sound. He said his sounded like an exhaust leak when warm and that is what they determined.
Same thing here. I posted the same thing awhile back, and I was told the deiseling noise is a combination of the valvetrain and the fuel injectors. I think it might be due to the cylinder heads also. Don't really know. I don't think it will cause any problems, and I was also told it was just a characteristic of the 4.2 v6 engine. Just my 2 cents.
FordMX,
I didn't mean to say that I changed the injectors.
I meant that I've had the noise for 18K miles and have had no problems with the engine. I think I've seen posts on this board going back to early 2000 that reference the "diesel" sound these engines make.

I am freaked out by the noise my 4.2 makes. on the highway tick tick tick, parked and idling tick tick tick. I thought it was an exhaust leak, the dealer checked and found none. I am convinced something is wrong with this engine. It also sends me a vibration via the accelerator, this usually happens when it down shifts from overdrive to 3rd. It is a bad vibration it nearly wears a hole through my boot, my warranty expires in december 2002, any advice or are all these trucks like this.
Fatboy, The vibration thru the accelerator - if it's a "tingling" feeling, my truck did that when new as well but with 17000 miles on it (still a baby?) I don't feel that anymore. One thing that will change the vibration in the pedal: on the accelerator cable under the hood, there is a 1" or so black piece that I guess is a dampener that is around the cable. I slid it back (I think closer to the firewall) and that feeling seemed to go away. I dont' know if this is the purpose of that piece but give that a shot.

also maybe a loud stereo
