I Raced A 350 V8....
Tonight was my first race. I pulled up at a red light in town about 20 minutes ago, and one of my old buddy's is sitting there in this 1985-86 short wheel base Chevy pick-up(4wd, 350 v8, Auto I think) right beside me. (I have the 2wd, 4.2 v6, 5-speed.) I look over at him and he nodded at me to race. I thought well, OK. We had about 3 whole blocks to race before the next light. The light turned green. I took off at moderate speed, just to make sure I did'nt peel out about 10 feet. At this point, we are side by side. Then we both hit second. We're still side by side at about 40 mph. We were neck and neck until I hit 3rd (I almost missed the shift.) Then he started gradually pulling away. By then we were getting close to the next light so I let off, then he let off. He beat me by about 2 1/2 to 3 truck lengths. His truck had dual exhaust and a Holley 4 barrel carburetor. Mine only has a Flowmaster si/do exhaust. I tell ya, there ain't nothin' like a drag race to get your adrenaline pumping! Now I have to do something to my truck to make it faster! Does a Superchip and an FIPK do alot for the 4.2 v6? I'm not making excuses, but I need to gain some serious HP. Any replies are welcome.
No Superchip here, simply because I don't want to have it reprogrammed everytime I add another mod to my truck. Eventually.. yes.
The FIPK does make a difference, especially above 40. (Seat of your pants feel, no actual #s to give you) I don't know that it makes "a lot" of difference by itself though. I just did the intake/exhaust all at the same time.
I just like spending $ for nifty little things that look cool period.

Ive got a gibson 3inch single exaust {instead of duals}trying to scavage as much low end tork as possible. And a modified k/n air intake kit. I noticed a big diff. when installing these together. Throttle response was greatly inhanced. No dyno no.s yet im waiting for a superchip flip chip, then a nitrous express wet systm. weve put two of these systms on our friends v8 rides and they work real well. what ive been told is this makes about 248 horses on the 2001 v6 without the nitrous then you can run 75 to a hundred shot of nitrous. with out the nitrous our 19lb injecters will be ok. with the nitrous I think 24lb would work if my math is right. 24lb injecters would be at the limit. With the above mentioned mods excluding the nx kit, you should be able to make a much closer race with your friend. If you buy your chip from a tunner im pretty sure a few of them will re do it if you put any diff . mods on I now of 2 that will. or at least use too.
hope this help's ya

Thanks for the replies and info. dudes. I already have the exhaust, so I will problably get the intake and then get the chip and have it programmed for these mods. I would do more for my truck, but I'm running a little short on moolah. You know what I mean? Thanks again.

WOLVERINE,
hey man. i have a superchip and gibson super truck. both gave some performance that i can feel. a FIPK is definetly next on my list though. as far as reprograming your chip after ever mod...its not true. you do not have to reprogram for simple things like exhaust, or FIPK. My chip was the first thing i bought and installed (from mike) and when i did so i asked him when i would have to reburn. he said not for exhaust or fipk. just my .02

BROTHERDAVE, IT WAS A 350. HE SHOWED ME THE MOTOR AFTER THE RACE AND IT WAS THE SAME MOTOR HE TOOK OUT OF HIS CHEVELLE(NOT SURE WHAT YEAR). THIS MOTOR ALSO IS THE SAME ONE THAT HE RUNS 8.5 SECONDS IN THE 1/8 MILE WITH. NO WONDER I GOT BEAT. HUH?
8.5 1/8 MILES and he only beat you by 3 car lengths?
did you now that from the outside a 305 and a 350 look the same, as a matter of fact the only difference is the piston size, the cranks are the same. the chevy 262, 265, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350 and 400 all have the same size blocks( the 400 has a larger balancer and different freeze plug location. the 350's out of "most" chevelles are nothing special. now if it were an ls6 454 that would be a different story.

Um.. I'm pretty sure that Mike would say that yes, you have to reprogram the chip for something like a charger or nitrous kit. I wasn't referring to mods like "Powered by Ford" sticker or gold-plated rims..
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
