V-6 okay
I have the V-6 4.2L with a few add ons. All in all I love my truck wish it had a lot more power though, if you are looking for an everyday driver and not much on power... the V-6 is perfect, but if your looking for power and some quick eat the ricer beside you look into 5.4L V-8 with an Eaton Supercharger... As for gas mileage it all depends on how I drive, 13- 18 mpg in city... about 21 on highway...hope this helps

V6 Power
The Horsepower on my 98' 4.2 V6 was at 210 when I bought it brand new, the torque was around 255 ft pounds. The current 2002 is around 202 horsepower, I'm not sure about the torque, check ford's website and they'll have it there.
My father has a 95' inline 6 that you were asking about, it's got less horsepower (under 200 horses) but it's got a lot of torque down low. If you're going to be using the truck to hual heavy loads all the time, you should probably look at getting a V8, I have done a few mods to my truck and find the power increases to be a great improvement over stock, my truck has done everything I've ever asked it to do, and I don't regret getting the V6.

Well as for the rice and alot of others you can look at my sig and notice I don't have too much to worry about. It'll be a daily driver which is why I was thinking about a V6. Probably won't haul anything big with it. Got other trucks for that. Just need a daily driver that gets good gas mileage and I can use out in the field and for hunting, four wheelin', etc. It'll be a different deal than the mustangs and the 90 F150 4x4 351W I've had.

Man, only 15-16 mpg??? Oh, that's all city? What do you get on the highway? I'm just curious what you get mpg per tank is why I ask. I get about 15 mpg per tank right now with a combination of city/highway driving. If I do mostly city it really drops down. Then if you play with the L.....hehe....

gas mileage
I normally get mileage between 17-19 mpg. That's mostly city, and it goes up to about 20-21 mpg when I do highway. I'm not real hard on my truck so my mileage is pretty good most of the time. If mileage is your main concern with getting a V6 , than go with a gear ratio of 3.08. You'll be better for mileage, but will have less power for pulling. Hope this helps some

I love the 300 motor
The best thing about the 300 I6 motor is torque, and lots of it. It's a square bore motor, like a 40, so it makes loads of torque. Secondly, they last forever. I have the 300 motor in my 81 E-150 van with well over 150K miles on it. A buddy of mine had a 78 Ford van with 550,000 miles on the original 300 motor. He had to rebuild the tranny 3 times though.
I have a 2001 F150 V6. I didn't test drive the 4x4 model, as I've got an 87 Bronco on 35" tires. I would definately consider getting the 3.73 gear package for a bit more mechanical advantage.
