Question

I had my 99v6 to the dealer yesterday and they say the ticking is because the exhaust pipe is so large and that under load it echoes through pipe and makes the ticking,is this a load of crap or is true? In any case its a very annoying sound,I am curious to know if anybody that has installed new pipes and muffler still have this noise?

Ahh the tick...

It was first noticed after I had the headers installed. Took it back to the shop, EXAUST LEAK!!! Simple, tightened the bolts and all set. now, a couple moths later, it's come back, so I'll go back. Also, I'd believe the thing about the exaust resonance. With the headers, you really can hear it more prominently, (thinner walls) and it does give a kinda diesel sound. Hope this helps everyone!

What kind of oil are you using? I'm thinking that if your not using 5w-20 oil that Ford specifies, your oil may not be getting up into the top of the engine to the crucial valvetrain parts. Thus causing a ticking sound. Thicker oils like 5w-30 an on up, has more trouble getting up in the engine than 5w-20 would. This is just a guess. My truck is doing the same thing, but I'm using 5w-30. So I'm going to switch to 5w-20 and see what happens. It's worth a try?

wolverine u make an interesting point, but if the ticking comes from the wrong oil, how come it dosent tick at idle, im no mechanic but if your engine has an oil related tick, shouldnt you hear it all the time?

Maybe the lifters and valves and such just ain't movin' fast enough at idle to make a tickin' sound. Just another guess.

My 98 F150 4.2 did the same thing about a month ago, the noise was coming from the same exact spot. (sounded like something was stuck in a bicycle spoke) about 3 weeks after I noticed the noise, and no-one had a clue what it was.. My engine blew.. I drove it to work, it ran fine, even with the noise. When I went to leave work, hard knocking started, and then there was oil all over the place. My husband is getting ready to tear down the engine to do a rebuild, we still aren't sure exactly what caused it.
