Somewhat disappointed with Ecoboost

Just bought a '13 FX4 ecoboost and had really high expectations based on all the hype. I love the truck for the most part and it's exactly what I was looking for in all areas except for speed and gas mileage. I raced one of my friends from about a 20mph roll up to near 100 and at pulled about a car at first and then he stayed with me the rest of the way. He has a '10 fx2 with the 5.4 and I was expecting to pull on him alittle more. The truck feels strong coming off the line but after it shifts into 2nd it feels like a normal truck the rest of the time. I am also only getting about 15.5-15.9 mpg on the highway (flat highway w/ cruise set to 65mph) and daily driving (not driving it hard) I am averaging around 12mpg. Anybody else having issues like this or any ideas of why I may be having these issues? Maybe my expectations were just too high. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

dude, he has 2wd truck and you're 4x4 so right off the bat you have more weight. Run him from a boosted 4x4 dig and put bus lengths on him. Your fuel mileage seems a tad low. are you resetting the mpg meter at each fill-up?

yeah i'm resetting and you're right on the 2wd vs 4wd part...what grade of gas are you running in yours? I just filled it up for the first time and went with premium and it seems to help a little

MPGs at 100 MPH are usually fairly low, no matter what engine you pick

The EB is built for low end torque for truck use, not high end HP. There's only so much you can get out of only 3.5 liters.

Your mileage is bad, at 65 you should be getting closer to 20. This is an issue that some people are having with the EB, give it a bit more time to break in before you start screaming at the dealer.

I didn't see any difference in mpg or butt dyno with gas grades. I know it makes a little more power on 91, but still trying to figure if it's worth $5 every fill-up. If I'm going to tow heavy or hot temps I'll throw 91 in there. If I'm going on a long road trip where the tank will be burned pretty quick it's 87 all the way. I also didn't see this "magical" mpg appear with mileage that so many have said. No difference at 2k, 5k, 10k, or 15k. All those seem to be the points of better MPG Hopefully yours will improve a little bit more.

Your ignoring what rear end you have.... generally speaking if your running the 3.73 rear end your going to get the same or worse mileage as every other truck out there. If your running the lower rear ends that is where the mileage will shine.

I'm rolling 3.55 in my 2x4 XLT. I routinely get 20mpg going 75-80mph, as high as 23mpg going 65mph. Even though 4x4 adds some weight and roll resistance you should still be within 1-2mpg of me. I'd definitely give your truck a little while to break-in before writing it off as a problem though.

I might have a 3.73 rear end and he also should have shorter tires, bumping up his gearing advantage even higher. Throw in the aerodynamic disadvantage of a 4x4, the 500+ pounds you have and the added rotational mass of the drive train and you really don't have a fair fight.

Last Friday I topped of my tank and zeroed the MPG display. I did a few miles in moderate traffic then set the cruise at 68 and just eased home which was about 25 miles away. I averaged right at 25MPG on the trip. This is in a 4x4 Platinum with the 3.55s. If you baby the skinny pedal these trucks can get really good mileage. I don't normally do this so my mileage is normally around 17 or so.

I just cleared 40,000. I was driving the wheels off the truck till I picked up the Jetta. Now it gets most of the commuter miles.

He wouldn't put bus lengths on a 5.0!
Sorry, bud. Had to do it.

Hey! A sense of humor! Refreshing to see. I thought new members had to check their senses of humor at the door.

I just had a conversation with my long-time pal who has the same truck I have except his has the EB. He was concerned about his gas mileage, too. His overall MPG for the life of his truck is sitting at about 14.8 now. My 5.0 is averaging much better than that.

I said that to say this: There are many fellers with the EB who have reported less-than-optimal (and less-than-advertised) fuel economy. It seems just random enough that it's hard to pinpoint what the cause is. Maybe we'll hear something definitive from Ford after enough folks have brought them back to the dealer and/or complained?
