Oil change intervals??

I was just wondering how often you Ecoboost owners out there are changing your oil? The book calls for either 1 year or 10,000 miles!!?? That seems a little to long to go on a semi- synthetic oil?? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

My understanding was ford calls for 6 months or 7500mi.

I plan on going with that interval. But I'm only at 4000mi so far, so I haven't actually taken a look at the filter or oil yet.

Between 3k-5k always for me and if the oil starts looking really dirty I'll change it before that...Synthetic blend w/ motorcraft filter and running strong @ 150K. I live in Mesa and the heat is rough out here not to mention the air quality...

That's nice, but you don't have an Ecoboost..............

Ford's recommended interval is "when you get the message on the screen". It can be "up to" 10,000 miles. I changed the original oil at 2500 and then set the oil life to 75%. I'm guessing that it will trigger my next change at about a 7500 mile interval. We'll see.

ive got an 11 ecoboost. took it back to the dealer yesterday at 4600 miles for an oil change. service guy says 5K for blend and 10K for synthetic. they put 5w20 blend in yesterday. at 10K i will start in with mobil 1.

i always do my own oil changes but when i bought this truck they gave me a couple free oil change coupons. i didnt feel like wrestling the filter off the first time due to a back injury. that was nice of them to give me the free oil changes but in looking at yesterday, it was 45 minutes each way to the dealer which was no problem since i found some things to do while i was up that way. however from the time i gave them the keys to completion it was 2 hours. i walked around the lot and read the newspaper and thought about how it is no more than 10 minutes in the driveway. really didnt say much for how quick their service dept is. and i had an appointment.

i know as a qick service tech at a dealership, we set are oil change stickers at 5k no matter what oil used, unless told to by customer. we do that to get the customer back more than just once a year. i will say that the wait time was a little long but not un heard of for a oil change even with a appiontment. Doing the oil change in a drive way will take more than 10mins though. there is a fiber cover under the trans that has to come off first just to drain the oil. then theres a metal skid plate under the engine, now there is a rubber plug that you can remove to drain oil. but when you remove the oil filter and it drains it does not all go down the way they want and gets all over the shield and makes cleaning a pain. now what i do is just revome to hole thing out of the way. but clean up still takes more time than the oil change its self even with it out of the way. its because of the tray thats under the oil filter. oil does not flow like the enginner wanted to, and still gets on the e-steering gear and parts around the area.

Interesting - the dealer must not have gotten the memo that the EB uses 5W30, not 5W20........

We don't have any of the fleet buyers going out on a limb and purchasing the EB engines so I don't have any real world on it yet. But considering that the technology used that Ford claims will work in this engine is not working in GM engines which it mirrors. GM has had to step up and replace quite a few of the V6 DI engines due to oil issues. The main issue is when to change and of course, GM uses an OLM system that they are now recalling and reprogramming to a much shorter OCI. I'd suggest a blend oil and change at 5000 miles until this engine has some history behind it. FWIW, GM OLM is now approximating 5000 mile changes.

I don't care what technology says! To get the most life from a motor change the oil on a regular interval! Not what some computer says!

the computer say to change it based on how u drive. idle and low speeds gets change more sooner and lots of highway dirving change less often.

Right, but it doesn't recognize the dust, sand, and junk in the air. Plus, I always suspect they don't care as much as I do about wear of my engine, so I will chanege a little more often than it says. Makes me feel better and has worked for all my vehicles.

I've only found 1 UOA on the net for the EB. It was the factory fill and it looked like a disaster for a 2500 mile run. Wear metals, which you expect to be higher than normal on factory fill, was 10 times and more than what you'd expect from a Triton 5.4 or 4.6. Copper was at 125+ to give you an idea. The oil that was supposed to be a 5w-30 had sheared so bad it was almost not a 20 at temp and was on it's way to being a 10 at temp. And this was a 2500 mile run. All direct injected engines run extremely high combustion temps. That's why they have oil cooling nozzles that run continuously pointed at the bottoms of the pistons, otherwise the piston couldn't survive the temps. Some engine designs will coke this area pretty bad. Coking can happen and not be a problem but it does act as an insulator if it builds. The bad part is if it turns loose in chunks. It's like throwing lava rock dust in the engine- not good. For those with the EB engines, I'd suggest changing the factory fill real early. I would change it at 1000 miles at the latest but it's your engine and your money.

you are correct. looked at the book that came with the truck and it does say 5w30. nevr rang a bell with me since 5w20 has always been the standard. now i am wondering what the difference will be. negligible? disasterous? i called the dealer and am waiting on a return call from my woice mail. i bet if i take it back they will just redo the paperwork and say they changed it.

i cant argue the change time on my ecoboost cause i have not done it yet. however my 2005 5.4 took me no more than 10 minutes. that is no lie, no exageration. and on that truck there was no mess to speak of. didnt have to jack it so that saved some time.

i dont expect to pull in and pull out in 10 minutes. but 2 hours. i would say 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.
