2002 4.2l f-150

Guys,

I need some advice here. My F-150 has 188,000 miles on it. Still has plenty of power and runs smooth. the last couple of days when I start it up the serpentine belt squeels but after a few minuetes of run time it stops. Now I noticed a metal cutting sound coming from the motor especially when idling or at low RPM. Scraping sound. I'm thinking the timing chain tension may be bad and letting the timing chain eat at the timing cover. I stopped driving it but am contemplating either a newer motor or getting this fixed at a repair shop. the truck is not worth a $1000.00 but I,ve had it since new and have taken care of it. What do you guys think?

Might be one of the idle pulley bearings is bad causing the metal sound. I'd wait till the motor was cold, take off the belt and start the truck and let it run for less than a minute. If there is no metal sound then one of the pulleys is going bad. Just spin each of them by hand and you should be able to tell which one it is. Far cheaper to fix.
