Ecoboost Fuel economy Vids

If you don't know who this guy is and his sight you should read up, he's the king of fuel economy. I highly respect his work, he's detailed and thorough, a great source of information.

He does drive a lot easier than most people would ever drive their vehicles but the results speak for themselves. This should put to rest any chatter from the V8 crowd about the fuel economy....prepare to be amazed.

What was the ODO reading? 13,695.0? It's good mileage, let's wait and see where everyone else is at when they reach 13,000 miles on the ODO.

I fail to see why you're so impressed. If you bother to do the math, his mph at 62 mph divided by the gallons per hour means he was getting a low of 16.9 with some of the run at 20.

What? You're missing some units in your equation, I'm not following you.

From the 9 minute video in the trip from California to N.C. he said the worst leg average was 26mpg over the miles driven; the best was 36mpg. While towing he averaged 24.4mpg over 600miles with an hour and a half of stop and go traffic factored into that MPG. Yes I'm sure he had some 16-20mpg stretches but knocking down that kind of fuel economy over the whole tank is really good.

Can you show me any other truck that can do this gas or diesel? (maybe the PS would come close but I've heard of no other.)

Jeez son, where'd you go to school, Kalifornia or the Institute at K Mart? Look at the scan gauge. When it reads Gallons Per Hour, it shows 3.65 gallons per hour. Divide 3.65 INTO 62 MPH which was his speed and there, miraculously, is the current fuel mileage. Or better yet, at 62 miles per hour, he is going to travel 62 miles in one hour. According to his scan gauge, it is going to consume, at the time of the reading, 3.65 gallons which equals 16.9 mpgs. You can't use 3.65 gallons of fuel in 62 miles and get 30+ miles per gallon. You need to know how to read the gauge first. Then you need to know that anybody with half a clue can play all kind of games with one. I have a modded 302 making 350HP in an LSC that by a scan gauge can get 41 miles per gallon traveling on level ground at a constant 65 mph. But unless you like walking, I wouldn't try it on just one gallon of gas.

the important thing to remember is that you are talking about instantaneous mpg versus an average. Thats what is impressive that we was able to average such good numbers.

One problem with your numbers, he hit 3.6x or more for less than two seconds while climbing a hill. This is also where he hit the peak boost so it could be assumed this is where the hill was the steepest. The rest of the hill climb he was in the 3.2x-3.3x GPH range. Once he hit the summit it dropped to around 2 GPH. Selecting the highest reading while climbing a hill to use for the average fuel burn would be as some might say "playing games".

Most of this video was of the truck climbing a hill with a small part going back down, not really the best place to determine the average fuel burn rates. However, I would say getting right at 17MPG while climbing a hill at 60+ is doing pretty good for a full size truck.

Ouch, seriously was that necessary? I pretty much understood your GUZ-INTAS; but I was confused by someone so smart using the crappiest figures possible (for a fraction of a second, uphill no less) as their smoking gun proof that what he did wasn't that special. That's pretty conflicting, especially when the main focus stated was the highest MPG AVERAGE achievable on a cross country trip.

Thank you for your explanation.

^ my guess is a stripped down xlt, 2wd & 3:31. That way it's less weight, skinnier tires & tallest rear avail. Great MPG none the less

I would agree....but it's just speculation. He had the truck loaded with people and camping gear and was also towing.....I suspect it may had a good "tune job" and a few other things done to accomplish this but it is a little hard to believe someone can load a truck like that and get that mileage when other people can't even come close with empty trucks and not towing. (obviuosly something is not being said) After 6-7 months of owner reports this past year there is a large discrepancy between HIS gas mileage and everyone else no matter how people baby them and try to squeeze out the best mpg.

I think ecoboosts get good mileage and am about to buy one but this is very mis-leading. Actual, real, and honest specs on the truck used would be very interesting.

Let's not forget there are things you can do to increase gas mileage that you wouldn't do on your own vehicle for long.

cheers

He's getting good numbers but he also has alot more miles on the odo...here's what mine does on a decent drive(FX4 Screw with about 2100 miles-10 hour drive nasty roads, hills and turns all the way!) With better roads and conditions I could of hit 21-22 4 sure!

yeah.....what pisses me off with gas mileage is my friends and I have been getting 19-22 MPG with V8's and 6 cylinder's for 35 years.(since I was in college) Every year we think we might see some improvement.....and now all this time has passed. Even my father was getting 19 (highway) with a suburban driving 70 mph ten years ago.

Vehicles are getting both heavier and more powerful - it's a credit to technology that they have been able to keep the gas mileage relatively constant!
