Here here; does anyone know if a gear reduction and oversized tires (35s) will void a warranty repair on this subject?

I also have problems with shifting on my 2000 S/C with 4.2 V6 and 5 speed. I took it to a different dealership than where I bought it at and they said they could not duplicate the problem (idiots....). Anyways, it clunks from 1st to 2nd and if I try to shift too fast from 2nd to 3rd it will squeal loudly. I have 7000 miles left in warranty and you can be sure it will be going back again at some point...

Does it always happen for you guys? For me it's just once in awhile, but I know it'll get worse - under warranty until Nov. I just don't think when I take it the problem will be hard to replicate.

Question 1st into 2nd clunk, any suggestions?

Brons2:
I had my transmission rebuilt a few thousand miles ago because of a grind going into 3rd. I told the dealer that it also had a clunk going 2nd, but I still have that. I saw the list of parts they put in it - quite a few - but it still will clunk into 2nd every once in a while. Is there anything I can do short of major repair to fix this? Will Synthetic fluid help, and will that void the warranty? It seems to help if I double-clutch coming out of 1st, if I have time to do it.

What causes this clunk???

a friend of mine just got an s-10 with the 4.3 and a stick... his shifter is so smooth that you cant even feel it slip into gear, you just kinda put the shifter where you think the gear is... absolutely no feedback. its pretty slick, but i'd rather have it a bit more notchy (not as notchy as my f-150 though!).

i think i have to judge all manual trannies by the one in my '94 honda... it was by far the best-feeling manual i've ever driven.

something we noticed on my friend's s-10 is that when you go to shift and put in the clutch, the rpms don't immediately drop; it drops down like 500-700 rpm and seems to sit there for a second before the rpm drops to idle. i'm pretty sure that i've heard this is due to some emissions stuff (like cars pollute more if the throttle is just chopped)... i'm not sure if my truck does this becuase i dont have a tach (well i guess i have the odometer tach, but i never use it because it resets my trip odo)... anyone know about the rpm thing?

as far as my truck, it dosent shift smoothly, but so far it's never ground, though i did hear the synchro make some noise when i tried to drop it from 4th to 2nd at 35 mph the other day... i also noticed that if you double clutch it it shifts much smoother... i just hope i have one of the trannies that wont have the synchros go out at 12000 miles (i have 6000 now).

I cant remember if the service bulletin came from autoweb.com or the nhtsa web site. The service dept was helpful after I called ford customer care about the 4.2s blowing up at 60,000 - the slave cylinder not engaging and the haunted windsheild wipers.
The dealer didnt want to repair it at first. My truck was out of warrenty

Wink

Do you think it's good to take it in more towards when the warranty is going to be out?

I shifted a Ranger not to long ago and it was tons smoother then the v-6.

Is it the syncros? Everyone seems to have their opinion, but what repair worked?

What was yours doing? Mine's not really "grinding" but it's just hard and sometimes it doesn't even shift from 2nd to 3rd.
Keyword is "sometimes".

It started sticking in 2nd to 3rd. After a few thousand miles it gradually became more difficult to shift. Then it started grinding going in to 1st and R. It was really stiff till it warmed up.

Same thing on my 1999 F-150 2nd to 3th clash. I have notice this problem when the truck is hot. What I done about it is to drain the ATF Mercon and fill the trans with 80W-90 gear oil. It clash less often now but the damage to the trans is already done. The trans shift a bit hard when it's a cold day. (Ford has made a very big mistake filling the trans with ATF Mercon)
On my 1985 Ranger 2.3L I4 5 speed Toyo Kogyo Mazda trans I was able to shift the trans fast without the gears clashing but still shift hard when cold 80W-90 oil in it. It's been like that since 1985.

I just developed a shift problem, a few days ago I was coming home and went to pull into my drive way and my truck would'nt go into any gear what so ever.... finally got it up the drive way and parked it... cursing all the way. Then the next day it had a lot of trouble shifting into 3rd, then all of sudden the the truck started shifting fine. Called the Ford Dealership today, they said the won't even bother looking at it since it don't do it all the time... so that is that... if it keeps on happening, I'm trading it in for a Lightning

Talking The clutch that is the ticket

on further examination of my truck it looks like the push rod on my clutch pedal doesn't go all the way in any more, but it looks like it had before, so I'm considering having the clutch adjusted... any thoughts? please?
