REALLY? Well I guess I thought wrong. My dads 2008 diesel runs up to 60 psi when he builds it up or is climbing a hill. I would have thought dual turbos would have at least 30 psi combined from the factory! So im assuming all those tuning companies will adjust the cimputers to not dump off the boost untill they hit maybe 20 then? Thats where they are getting the huge horsepower gains when they tune the SHO right?

Diesels naturally need more boost to be effective, because a diesel engine runs off compression, not combustion. Therefore it needs thicker air (higher density=higher pressure) to make more power.

50-70 psi on a diesel, in my mind, is probably the equivalent of 10-20 on a combustion vehicle. But I may be off a bit.

It also depends a lot on the size/trim, and the compressor of the turbo itself on how much boosts it builds.

Did some searching on Google. Found an article about the initial launch and press release on the Ecoboost. I'm pretty sure this is the car version, but it talked about using Honeywell GT15 turbos with water cooled bearings, producing a combined(?) 8-12 psi, depending on tune, rpm, etc.

50 psi on a gas engine will blow the heads right through the hood..........

And send one side of the block straight out each side of the car.

If you look at the Livernois website for their SHO tuning. They are not only increasing the boost but also making the boost hold longer, getting the transmission to shift quicker/firmer, and I believe they are adjusting the ignition as well.

Get ready for 50rwhp gains.

On our test drive this past weekend we romped on two EB's to see what they had under the hood. I didn't see it fall flat on it's face at all to 75 MPH.

Cruising at 65 I nailed it and I was doing well over 90 so fast I was looking in the rear view to make sure no smokies were checking us out.

That is one awesome engine.

What I meant was compared to how fast it hit 60, anything after was noticeably slower, bit when you take into account drag, gearing, etc, that understandable.

The video looks pretty impressive to me.

It's got a huge frontal area and the shape is not slippery at all compared to any modern car. So yea, accelleration above 80 or so is going to be relatively sluggish.

Basically, 0-60 is power to weight and gearing. For accelleration above 80, total aerodynamic drag is a huge factor.

The thing clearly makes good power.

Unless your dad has a turbo upgrade on that Diesel he shouldn't be seeing anywhere near 60psi of boost. No diesel can turn that kind of boost with a stock turbo or in the case of the 6.4 Fords Turbos. Even the 6.4 Fords with an aftermarket tune only see up to about 40 psi and that's a crap ton of boost.

He gets it to spike to 60psi on a GOOD boost launch. At least thats what the edge displays (the stock psi gauge tops out at 40psi). When we had it tuned, the guy said it can get to about 60psi, but since navistar sucks like no other and doesnt make enough fasteners from the heads to the block, the tune wont let it hold very long. If it were to hold at 60psi (which these turbos cannot sustain) then you would have some major gasget issues. Thats why they say DO NOT tow more than 5000lbs with a ford that has a tune! (the new 6.7 has more than enough fasters because ford actually built it)

the edge is reading the map sensor, not true boost, which is showing you boost plus 14.7 psi, so he might be seeing 45, also, if the DPF and egr's are still on the truck it will show boost way high. When i had my spartan tuned 6.4, i was seeing 38-39 on my 250 tune, but would see 45 on my 150 tune with egr's still on. My 250 tune put down right at 500/1000. BTW, tell your dad that his edge is a piece of ****, and to get a real tuner.

My buddy just ran his ecoboost in the 1/4 and ran 14.9 @ 96 mph

Anyone who actually owns one of these will tell you there is nothing sluggish about this motor. I have had a 4.6, 5.4 and a V10 6.8 and this little motor in my opinion out performs all of them hands down. Sorry guys bigger is no longer better!
