V6 mpg
Was not in a big hurry today in getting up to see my folks in KC, so I set the cruise on 65 mph and enjoyed the truck. Did the same on the way back for a total of the usual 209 miles. Filled up and got on the interstate and filled again when I got home and was reminded just how good the mileage can be when not going 70 mph+. I received 20.95 mpg, which mirrors the mileage I got last summer when I did the same thing. (20.19 mpg) Usually, when the wife is along, we push the 70 mph limit and average 17.5~18 mpg range. I have noticed this before on other trips where the speed was reduced for an extended period, but this was a reminder to me that there is a certain "sweet spot" for my combo V6/auto/3:55 SC truck and it appears to be 65 mph. Have gone slower but the next big step seems to happen at 50 mph and that is just too slow for me. I have kept track of my mileage since new and now have 30,500 miles on it. It still pales in comparison to the 97 GMC 4.3 V6/5 speed/reg cab @ 23 MPG that I traded in on this truck, but the Ford is a much better vehicle for what we need. Aside from the warranty covered problems we have had on this truck (none engine related) it has become one of our favorites. By the way, the truck is completely stock, no bed cover, but I did just put a new Motorcraft air filter in it, and it has had Mobil 1 since the 500 mile mark. Reasonably pleased Ford owner.......j.b.

yes, very good restraint on your part...I have never seen above 14mpg. Pretty *****ty, considering I opted for the v6 for the better gas milage. Whoops! Put that choice in the "Well, if I had to do it again..." file.
Low of 16-17 w/ best of app. 23 going to GA and back. Doc

I have a 4.2 and get about 15 and that is about it. I just got back tonight from having a fuel system cleaning. I have tried everything and everyone says that the v-6 SUCKS GAS faster than you can put it in. Tonight I was told that it was because everyone BUT FORD uses a delivery system that only gives the injector, a shot of gas when it is about to fire that cyc. Ford seems to think more is better so they shot every injector everytime hoping that the engine will catch up. I do not know if this is true but I have a Chevy 4.3 that gets 23 mpg all the time no matter what you are doing with that truck. I like the full size fore but V-8 would have been better for sure.
I have 2000 sport reg. cab, short-bed. Im getting between 15-17 average.I drive 65 on the highway and do the limit in the city. I dont know how people are getting 20+mpg.
just my .37 Rupees.

They say you get better mileage with the superchip. Now the superchip gave me a lead foot rather than better MPG's but it's okay. I love it.

My '98 XL Shortbed 4.2L V6 now gets about 23mpg on the highway at 70m.p.h with the airconditioner off (ie. in winter.) It has 34,000 miles on the odometer and a SuperChip installed.
When I first purchased it the truck, it consistently got 13-14mpg until about 19,000 miles when the mileage started to slowly creep up. It has continued to inch up ever few thousand miles or so. Power has also increased over the life of the truck. I also run Mobil-1 synthetic oil and a K&N Filter.
In-town mileage now averages about 16mpg. Its been a great truck, but not exactly fuel efficient. The Superchip and the K&N Filter give it roughly the same power as a new 4.6L, and with the money I saved - by choosing the V6 over the small V8 - I was able to install a custom power leather seat, power windows, locks and alarm with remote starter (about $1800. in all)

Does anyone know what TSB 99-26-9 (item #1) at this site refers to (gas mileage vs. customer expectation)?

I do alot of driving for work with mine, and am lucky to see 18 MPG on the highway. Its too bad that this v6 engine has the most power when it gets the worst mileage. If I keep my foot in it and drive like everybody else I get like maybe 15-16 if that. And thats with a 5 speed
I guess I am lucky, I get 16-17 mpg in the city... I normally go just about the speed limit, perhaps 5 mph over... no lead foot here! I have not done any highway driving yet, but hope that it has even better outcome. I have friends with Mustangs and Celicas that have 12-13 mpg and they don't speed. I wonder if it is just luck or a good truck or my driving or what, but so far my truck's been a joy to own and drive!

I have had my 4.2L SC SS for a little over a month (Merry X-Mas to me
)and have put about 2,200 miles on it. Have run an average mpg on 6 tanks of gas and came up with 17.43 mpg. I drive 50 miles per day open HW and, stop and stop traffic, in and out of Dallas. No mods as of yet. Still trying to recover from sticker shock.
Former trucks:
Dodge Ram 2wd x-cab w/ 318 V8 = 15 mpg avg.
Dodge Dakota Sport 3.6 V6 reg cab short bed = 18 mpg avg.
Based on this I think my F150 is right in there and I don't have to worry about the trans. falling apart a 30-40k miles like on both POS Dodges.
I am a Ford guy from here on out.

Rubin, without intending to offend you or any Dodge owners out there, after going thru the experience of ownning a Dakota and Ram....and now the 150..well, it must feel like you died and went to truck heaven.
Do some of the horror stories about your former vehicles bear out?
Do some of the horror stories about your former vehicles bear out?
I always track mileage on all my vehicles and after 33,000 kms., I average 14.9 mpg. My lowest has been a 10.5 and my highest a 20.7. A lot of my driving is short distance and in the winter it burns gas just warming it up, my highway driving is usually pulling a boat trailer plus I have used it to pull a 5th wheel. I did expect better mileage but I can live with it as long as it runs trouble free and so far the truck has been super.
