Post V-6 Sounds like a diesel.

I don't know what my 2001 V-6 is supposed to sound like at idle. I'm used to new engines being perfectly quiet (except for fan and belt driven components). Mine sounds kind of like a diesel (not a lifter type noise). Anyone else know if this is normal or have a similar experience?

Kinda cool, aint it?

Mine sounds like a diesel too.

Just one more thing about my F150 that says "truck" to me.

I like it.

Thanks, Doug! I thought I might have had a problem - and, yeah, it is cool! :-)

Cool

I could never quite describe that sound (I notice it mostly when driving up a causeway - or a hill- with some kind of wall a few feet away from the truck reflecting the sound). My wife was always worried about that sound

I think it is the fuel injectors. Mine is only bad on cold start up, but it certainly sounds like a diesel then. I don't hardly notice it anymore.

Cool

It IS the fuel injectors firing. I noticed it the day I picked up my truck and used a troubleshooting stethiscope (sp?) and hit the fuel rails and thats it. I dont know that it sounds "cool", but thankfully thats all that it is. But, why only on the 4.2??

Mine is a 2000 4.2 and the engine is quiet
but the exhaust leaks are horrible. My dealer
ordered new parts to correct them.I do hear
a sort of growling when you really dog it,
don't know if it is good or bad,but I do
like the way it runs.

Exclamation

I bought a 2001 4.2 Supercab, going in for the 1000 mile oil change today. I have to admit, it does sound like a diesel. Even though I am a loyal Ford man, I have to admit, the low rumble of a Dodge motor sounds better.

i dont belive that you had to shut off your truck so they could hear you order. i have a six banger, and also a 97 powerstroke. belive me in the stroker you do but in the six no way. the six does have a knockin noise to it and i hate it. but not as loud as a stroker
