Can you port and polish OHC motors??? I think if you expect these kindof gains with the 4.2 we should see even better with the 4.6...This is just the type of mod I've been looking for as I want to stay NA...Good posts, guys, let me know..
Thanks,
Kapthowdy

Kapthowdy, yes you can do these to a 4.6.What you need to do is go over to the engine forum and do a search on posts by neal the hp freak. He has done a lot of these mods to his 5.4 and he is better suited to give specifics on a 4.6.His goal (I think) is to run a 13.9 1/4 mile narually aspirated. He is not currently on line as he is switching servers or upgrading but he will be back shortly. He has posted lots of good info for these types of mods. Good luck

I will have access to a dyno thats near by. however when I do the mods, I will slap my cash down and get it all done at once. that way it will save me on the engine labor charges if done at once...

I currently have $700 saved and I'm expecting a hefty check from the gov. plus some early graduation money.

Hopefully I can get all this done for under 2,500 bucks which will be kinda hard with the exhaust and headers but oh well...

then it'll take me till xmas to get a supercharger and tranny; but those are future plans... if all things go right i will have all the mods listed by nola done within 6 weeks.

I will keep you posted

Thanks LCrashz...

I've seen Neals Sig many times in the past, but that's not the type of porting and polishing I'm talking about...I want to remove the heads and intake manifold and have them professionally ported and polished at a machine shop for better flow in effect making them more like the PI heads on the 99 up 5.4L...thats when they gained a SOLID 25 hp...My truck is getting on in miles, and though it runs great, I was thinking I might rebuild the motor with more performance in mind instead of buying a new truck (I special ordered this truck in 96, and it's exactly the way I want it except power, and it still looks brand new...). For all those that would say "why not just buy new"...why should I? I could certainly afford it, and am thinking about it, but I like this one (sorry if that seems defensive, but every time somebody posts about putting alot of money into replacing a motor or something, we always get these asses that say "buy New"). Anyway, that's about it...I already ported the T B, and also gutted the MAF (and for some reason it still runs fine, and faster), I just want better heads...any ideas would be nice, and thanks in advance,

Kapthowdy

Hey Hut,

Gutting your Maf is when you pull your maf from the filter housing, you then either cut out or machine (I have a small maching shop in my house) out the center post that extends from the sampling tube of the maf. All you do is chop it out, clean all the shavings out, then reinstall it. You are opening up the Maf by about 30% I would say, but it's not calibrated for the extra air, so who knows what will happen...Many others have done this same mod and messed something up, but I can't see why. Mine worked perfectly, but I wouldnt advise anyone try it, mine must have been a freak...I never understood why it should work for the mustangs maf, but not ours. I was going to upgrade to a Granetelli Maf, so I figured what the hell. It probably was one of my best mods so far, and it was for free...it felt better than my chip...I think the way I did it was less shocking to the little filiment things on the inside of the tube, so maybe thats why it worked...I just chucked it up in my mill and gently started cutting...everybody else used a hacksaw, and probly shocked the hell out of it. Anyways, if you do it be careful and don't come screaming at me if you mess anything up, I AM NOT ADVISING THIS MOD.

See Ya,
Kapthowdy

Patrick- The airbox mod in the link....did you just cut the airbox in half? And what is the deal with the slencer? And that was all done on a 4.2? And lastly, i know lotsa questions, did you notice any performance gains or just different exhaust sound....and did the engine become noisier?

well, that's not my site, I found that just browsing around other people's posts..
that's done on a 4.6 engine and the guy has a link posted for where he got the ideas from. the Maf from the 4.6 looks exactly the same as our 4.2's I would imagine it's gonna bring the same result when ported out..

Do a search for "airbox mod" and you'll find alot of pros and cons about what it does and if it's worth it ..
I have the airaid and It's loud at wot, but the same sounding when normal driving, kinda like the same thing as an airbox mod I guess..

good luck, and read on.. use the search engines, lots of good info on this site!

In my opininon all that porting and modifcations are a total waste of money. You should of started with 5.4L and you would of saved alot more money in the long run. With the 5.4L say you add chip, new exhaust, and performance air filter you are looking at over 300 hp and maybe 400lbs feet of torque or more. I believe you will put to much stress on your engine and wont get the maximum life potential of your engine. Just my 2 cents

save money in the long run? Have you seen the sale prices that ford puts on their v-6 trucks. My 1st v-6 truck a 98 2 wheel drive was 12,999 brand new, a v-8 would have set me back almost 20 K, my current truck a y2k 4x4 w/v6 was on sale for 19,999- the v-8 equivalent was 25 and some change. so the way I look at it I have around 5 grand to put in the motor w/the money I saved. These v-6s can take the porting and polishing mods without a problem. Lets face it, yes it would be nice for everyone to have a v-8 but financial reasons won't allow everyone to get the v-8. these modded v-6 trucks are real sleepers.

I got my V-6 for a good 4000 under the 4.6l (3000 promotion, 1000 charge for the engine) and 5000 under the 5.4l. With a limited income, it was a damned good choice to keep the 5k. Or one could look at it this way. Its 5k in accessories. One could throw in a 6.5 inch lift, 35in tires/wheels, gears, chip, exhaust, headers, and the FIPK for the 5k I saved...especially since I and many other people dont need the truck to tow, just a daily in city driver.

From my situation, when I got my truck, I had the choice between a 99 F-150 "wrok series" (i.e. Stripped to the chassis) with a 4.6 or, a 99 F-150 XLT with an extended warranty that covers the truck for as long as I'm paying on it with the V-6. Given the difference between the 4.2 and the 4.6 isn't amazing to start with, I don't mind what I got that much. In fact, if I had the entire thing to do over again, the only thing I would have changed was that I didn't get the in-dash CD player like I wanted.

uh.. guys! I didn't intend for this to be a "why i got my v6" thread!!

its just a thread simply asking the hp gains of porting just like my first post. i'm not interested in "its not worth the money" or anything as its my money and i can spend it how i want.

sorry for being a jerk, i just get upset when threads stray from the main idea

this was a good thread until daveh ruined it.. thanks alot bro! j/k

wacker,
I felt I had to reply to that insult about modifying our motors. Some people just don't get it ( makin it go faster is great fun, no matter what size motor the truck has)
