Thumbs up PROJECT FOR ALL V6 OWNERS, SIGN IN HERE!

Sorry for the caps but...

Okay here I go: I would like to set up a web page about our V6 engine concerning sound! It seems everybody I know say that V6's will always sound bad, myself included! I need to prove myself and everyone else that has said this wrong

So all of you that have a V6 F150 with custom exhaust, could you please record your engine sounds!

Now record them as follows:
  • Engine starting up
  • At idle for 15 seconds
  • Reving up to 3500 RPM a few times
  • Hold the throttle at 1500 RPM for 10 secs
  • idle again for a few
  • turn of the engine

If we all do it like that we will be able to compare a little better our mods! Next up I will need a list of your mods.

If you can record but can't transfer it to computer, then you can send me a tape and I will take care of it for you! If you can transfer to computer send me the highest quality you can, I will make a MP3 of the file and set it up on my server with a list of mods!

This should help out a lot of 4.2 owners looking for a different sound! So what do you say? Will you all help out! I myself will record the stock engine setup with only a K&N filter. I will need to buy a little recorder but they are only 25 dollars Canadian (*hint *hint, buy one for yourself if you don't have one )

Thanks, I hope to get some help on this! It would be kick@ss to have a page like this

The best sounding exhaust we have ever heard for the 4.2 V-6 F-150, and in fact all our our V-6 vehicles over the years (Explorers, Rangers), is the Borla brand cat-back exhaust system. I'm not that hot on Borla for the V-8's as they can sometimes drone and are a bit pricey, but for V-6's, I have never heard a better tone, anywhere.

None of that nasty loud V-6 "rasp" & noise when you chop a muffler off or put on a Flowmaster (no offense here, Flowmaster is a good company, they just sound yech to me on V-6's or 4 cylinder engines). The Borla exhaust gives a very refined and distinctive V-6 "growl", that turns heads without droning in the cabin or being too loud; to me, they are just perfect for these V-6's. It sound kinda like an Alfa-Romeo or Fiat with an Abarth exhaust, for anyone who has ever lived in Europe.

Sorry I don't have any .wav files we can post, but I thought I would at least get some kind of response & suggestion up here for you guys to think about. Tone is so very subjective and elusive, but bolting on a Borla will give you a great tone, that I think just about anyone would be pleased with.

Best of luck to all,

Thanks for the input Mike, I agree sound is so subjective. So a page like this might help out other V6 owners. Sort of like browsing a store May save some money for other people too...

Hi Rubin,

Yes, we have looked at the Dynomax system, and in fact are using it on my wife's '99 4.0 Ranger, the Dynomax Super Turbo cat-back system. We did this only because at the time, Borla had not yet released their system for the then-new '99 Rangers.

The Dynomax Super Turbo cat-back is one of the least expensive aftermarket cat-back exhaust systems on the market, and is not stainless steel, of course. It is very quiet however, and makes no more sound than the stock exhaust, with one exception; when you get on it, it does bark out a little bit. There is really no perceptible change in tone with this exhaust, other than it being just a little bit more pronounced when you floor it; otherwise it soundes exactly the same as stock.

It's a good system for those who want a quiet exhaust, it does add power, as it uses a turbo-style muffler, whose characteristics are good flow and very quiet. It's good enough that even though I love teh sound of the Borla far better, we won't be yanking it off for a Borla, it's there and working so it stays since it's paid for.

Now this is of course on a 4.0 V-6 Ranger, which is a different motor from the 4.2 V-6 in the F-150; however, we have heard that system on the 4.2 V-6 F-150, and it has the same basic characteristics, very, very quiet, so if you're looking for a pronounced change in tone, you'd need to look elsewhere, but if you want a quiet system that will add about 8-10 hp to the 4.2 V-6, this could be a good choice.

I hope that info helps a bit, & good luck!

Congrats on the idea, I think this will be great...

Mike & others...have you heard this "Ravin" exhaust on the v-6 yet? Everyone keeps talking about how great the sound is, but I have yet to hear about it on a v-6.

Thanks,
Chris

Would these exhuast systems sound some what the same on a 4.9 i-6 if you had split headers and then the exhuast system of choice. What is the best sounding loudest exhuast for these six bangers.

yes I have a ravin z55 on mine, sounds fantastic =)

I just cut off the stock muffler and bolted this one on.. small but noticable power gains =)

by the way, Mike I was unable to find a Borla system for the 4.2 anywhere including the Borla site.. Any Ideas? is this system from the Ranger Bolted on the 4.2?

thanks
