How many miles before major trouble?
Its the luck of the draw. Certain engines have had a reputation of longevity. Ford's inline six, Dodge's slant six, an old 350, Toyotas 22R and any Volvo or Honda engine. Rule of thumb is if you haven't had to do anything major within 100K, your doing good. I think it is to early to tell how long Fords triton series will last. To bad ford discontinued the inline 6 (300CI) My old one lasted a long time. My friend has one with over 100K and no problems and my wife's uncle has one with 270K. All he has had to do was replace the clutch a bunch of times. It has no power but it is still running.
I've seen the triton engines already with over 100K. Everyone I talk to with that kind of milleage says that they have minor problems like batterys, a few leaks, ect... One thing that will tell how long your engine will last is how you treat it. If you don't change the oil very often and you have a cinder block for a right foot no you won't last very long. On the other hand if you change your oil relegiously every 3K-5K and drive like your drivin miss dasie you might see hundreds of thousands of miles. So it depends on how you treat your truck, or at least part of it depends.
