Post borla catback

Anyone running the borla catback system on the V-6? Looking to get one but curious about performance, and sound. Any experience with the system would be appreciated.

What year is your truck? The Borla Cat-back fits only on the 1997. I have one on my 1999, and believe me, it does not just bolt on to the 1999. The hangers are in completely different spots for the 1997, which the kit was made for. But as far as the sound and performance, they are great with the Borla system. Pretty quiet most of the time, but sounds great when you get on the throttle.

I have the 1998 F-150, I contacted borla and a place that sells the product for my truck and both said that it would work on my truck just like the 97'. CR1 where did you purchase your system from and did they say the same thing about it working perfectly with your truck, or did you find that out when you tried to install it? What modifications had to be done to get it to fit on your 1999?

Hey, sparks, I got mine through a mail order catalog, but I just called and ordered with the Borla part number (14705, I think) that the Borla rep gave me, and I didn't find out that it didn't fit right until I took it out of the box and held it under the truck, and the hangers were in completely different places. So I took it to an exhaust shop, and he said he would just cut off the Borla mounts, and weld on a new one. I was really impressed, until I realized that there was all kinds of black soot collecting on the rear quarter panel, because the tip was tucked in too far under the body. The custom mount has also since loosened from the hanger, and vibrates badly at about 1000 RPM. I love the sound, and the performance is there, but I wish that Borla would have not told me that the part would work on my truck, because I wanted to do the work myself, and they basically tricked me into buying a part for someone else's truck. Check the part number that Borla gave you. If it is 14705, you (or some shop) will have to do a custom installation involving some welding. If that is the part number, and you still want to do it, e-mail me and I will sell you mine for real cheap, if you are interested. It only has about 6000 miles on it, so the muffler has about 994,000 miles left on the warranty.

CR1,

I just got off the phone with Borla, I called them to ask them about what you had brought up and they told me that the part number 14705 is for the 1997 + 1998 V6 F-150. The guy told me that they were not selling a product that would fit the 1999 or 2000 model at this time. He told me pretty much what you said that on the 1999 the hanger locations are different. The 97 + 98 share the same hanger setup. So I'm going ahead and taking the plunge with this system. Thanks for the info. It helped me cover all my bases before spending the money. Thanks again.

Question

Hey Sparks i was just curous as to if you are putting duals on your truck or just a single pipe? After you get it put on i would like to here about the sound and power gain you get because i have been thinking about the Borla on my STX 4.2L. CR1 the reason why the hangers were different is in 99 the F-150 body style was changed.

I emailed Borla several months ago and asked them what the correct part number. They said it was 14808. Of course, that's for a supercab short bed. Regards,

If I'm not mistaken the 97 exhaust exited in from of the rear wheels and on the 98+ the exhaust exited from behind the rear wheel. This would tend to imply that the hangers on the 97 are unique to the 97.

STXMAN,

The only system that borla offers for the 4.2 L V-6 is a side exit behind the rear wheel. It comes with a 9" long, 3 1/2" diameter slant cut intercooled tip. This application fits both the 97' and 98' models. This comes straight from borla. The part number is 14705, mtucker part 14808 is for the 4.6L V-8. As far as the hanger positions for the two years are concerned, I was told that there are 97' and 98' models that exit behind the rear wheel, if you were concerned about your exhaust and you have one that's in front of the rear wheel you might want to ask them some further questions. Hope this helps.
