Question best way to gain Horsepower

Hi I have 1999 f150 V6 5spd with series 40 Flowmaster muffler, my question is what is the most cost effective way to gain horsepower(without a blower). What are the actual gains in power with the Airaid and Superchip kits(not the B.S. 25hsp claim that the superchip guy gave me).

Any help is great
Thanks

Here are my experiences:

K&N Filter alone - no noticeable difference

Superchip - very noticeable power increase throughout the rev range and much better shifting

Airaid - noticeable power gain at high rpm (but not nearly as much as the chip); much racier sound at full throttle.

Next for me is an electric fan - box says 15 hp but web site says 12 on a Chevy - that is probably at the crank, so maybe 10 at the rear wheel.

You can always buy the chip and if not happy then return it within 30 days. With automatics the chip changes the shift points which make the truck much more responsive. I don't know about 5sp. There is thread called "Computer Chip". You should check it out.

Go to the computer chip fourm and do a little research. I have th chip in my V6 5 spd and it makes a very noticable difference. I do belive that It is a 25hp gain at the flywheel but don't hold me to that. It does give you an increase in mpg as well as increased acceleration and awesome passing power. It also eliminates the top speed limiter so you can go faster than the speedo says. I love it it is the best mod I have made.

Mike is right the Airaid only produces between 8 and 10hp, Airaid claims this. If I remember correctly the hp gain is at the rear wheels and that is why it is an effective mod. But I have to stick with what I know and that is the superchip is the best thing I have bought.

do i have to use 92 octane gas or will 89 work just as well. i really dont want to spend $225 on a chip then have to pay 10 to 20 cent more on a gallon of gas.

Yes you have to use 93 octane, the chip requires it. Mike should be along shortly to exlain about all of the price delta stuff. From personal experince I thought the same thing but I can go longer without filling up. It is worth the $225.

Ok you guys with the flowmasters, now its your turn. What does your flowmasters do besides sound loud?

I have installed the Airraid, Noticable difference by itself, I can maintain speed on hills a little better and it does growl a little when I stomp on it. I drove for a couple of days before I installed my Superchip to see the difference. I feel that the super chip made a VERY noticable difference, sure It's not a V-8 but it's a lot more fun to drive with than without.
I made a recent highway trip, wverything was much smoother, less downshifting, maintain higher speed easier, did not seem as if I was working the motor as hard. Oh and when you wanna go, it definitly gets faster than before. I'm debating on wether I should have spent all the money But if I could only keep one I 'd get the chip first. And I had a Plain Drop in K&N filter prior to Airraid http://home.earthlink.net/~cdtackett/index.html

Hey JDm,

The gain at the flywheel is as stated, and comes right off the dyno. So before you go calling my veracity into question, make sure you know the facts. It's quite clear from many of the V-6 owners here posting right in this thread that they feel the Superchip is by far the best mod they made, and adds the most power. These people wouldn't say it if it weren't true.

If you have anything you want to say to me, my phone number is below. We'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, and go over this in detail with you, so you'll have a good understanding of just what the Superchip does, and how; what it can do, and what it can't do, we're happy to help provide all the information you might want to give it some thought and make your decision.

The Superchip cannot suddenly turn a 2ton+ truck into a fire-breather, but it *is* the single best bang-for-the-buck modification you can put on that vehicle.

With regards to the actual power gains from the Airaid kit, on the 4.6 we see 12 hp, and on the 5.4 we see 14 hp. We haven't had the time to see what the Airaid kit for the V-6 does, but after driving the vehicle with that component, I think it's safe to say that it's adding the same basic percentage of power gains as on the V-8's, in proportion to the smaller size of the 4.2 V-6. I think we're going to see somehwer between 8-10 horsepower from that kit without any problems.

We wish you well,

Question

I also had the same question about the Airaid passing state inspection, will it pass in Texas? The Flowmaser provides a less restrivtive exhaust flow, provinding a little HP gain. I have the 40 sereis and I love it it makes the V6 sound like a beast. The only reason I ask the question about the airaid is because a Stae inspector wouldn't pass my nissan with out a cover over filter.
