Welcome to the list, Glad you can join us and hope your here for the long haul. It's late here (SOCAL) so I will be brief. YEs, you may buy everying as a kit, probably get a better deal on it. If not, You will have to buy the ring and pinion gear set as one item, The (OPTIONIAL)kit for the R&P includes shims, timken gearings, gasket, loctite, crush collar, marking ink, etc, etc. The Limited Slip package will have to be purchased seperately as well. I have US/STRANGE gears in my truck, very strong gears, and made right here in the USA! Good luck !!
3.08 to 4.10 WOW! better be wearing a diaper, your going to need it! lots of power!!

Frank&Beans,
I have been really interested in changing gears as well. Can you tell me where i can get the parts and the approximate cost. Also is this something I could attempt to do myself (I hate letting other people work on my truck). Thanks in advance.

Jakobi,
where to buy parts;
look through any recent 4X4 mag. I know this sounds crude, especially if you have no idea what you are doing. But this is a great way to see first hand, which companies sells gears, many have 1-800 numbers. Make a list of the companies on paper and compare prices on gears, shipping costs, install kits etc. As you talk to these techs. they will tell you (for the most part) which gears are used most often in the aftermarket industry.
Cost;
around $180.00 for the gears and $70.00 for the install kit
Installation;
Only if you have experience installing gears. I am like you, I do not let anybody touch my truck unless the I know the company and the folks working on it. I visited the shop that installed my gears (PROGEAR), took a took around and asked lots of questions, You can learn a lot about a shop and how well they "keep it clean" and how throughly they answer your questions. Some shops around here sell tons of volume, will spend as little time as necessary w/ you, they want your money and on to the next guy. I try to avoid thses shops. But I will visit them to compare prices, check on disounted items, and try to make a deal. I called the sales at PROGEAR guy 3 or 4 time over a month time frame, (asking questions about their work, He picked up on my interest in his shop when I made my 3rd call. . Do you go to the first doctor you see and have an operation? Heck no! you shop around! Just because he's called a Doctor or mechanic does not mean he is the best or fully qualified. The biggest advice I can give anybody, is don't rush into a project. Give yourself plenty of time to think and re-think what aftermarker, OEM parts you are installing or having installed on your truck. It's very easy to "impulse" shop, buying a product the first time you see it. Money was a bit of an issue for me, so as I was saving up for the gears and shop fees, I did lots of calling around, and if you can visit some speed shops to get some ideas, you would be surprised what infomation folks will tell you if you hang around long enough. I live in San Diego, CA and there are more aftermarket shops around here than Carter has pills, But that does not mean they have the best prices. The competition is good, but so is mail order. That's why I like to mail order most of my products. I am an avg. "joe" and only want the best parts, products for my truck. I am like a chick w/ coupons, enjoy saving $$ when I can. Another way to judge a shop's performance is to ask customers who have had their vehicle serviced there. That's what I did. (Gimpkiller) another list member, who lives nearby had his 4x4 gears changed at PROGEAR. I asked Gimp, how he liked them and he said they treated him very well and shop guys were very professionial. He was very pleased w/ there work. Recently, my pinion seal was leaking diff fluid, so I called the shop back and I spoke to the same guy whom I delt w/ several months ago. Told him my dilemma and he said bring it on in, they replaced it free of charge, even though the 3 month, 3,000 mile warrenty had expired.
Some questions to ask about gears;
1 Where are they made?
2 How much are they?
3 Are they good quality?
4 Do you or will you match a lower price from another company or shop?
5 What are the proper break-in proceedures?
Some questions to ask about the shop;
1 What kind of diff oil do you use?
2 Do you guarantee your work? for how long?
3 How long have you been in the business?
4 How experienced is the mechanic?
5 How many gear seta they installed?
6 How much do you charge for the install?
7 What do I do if the pinion seal starts to leak after my warrenty expires?
8 What other items (if any) are needed for the install, how much will that cost?
Install kits;
1 What is included in an install kit?
2 How do I know if I need an install kit?
3 Won't the bearing puller damange the old bearing when they come off the pinion gear??(the answer should be YES), if not they are BSing you.
4 What kind of bearing are in the kits? (the best ones are Timken bearings)
5 How much are the install kits?
I can think of more questions, but this is a good start. Hope this helps you a little. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions, I love to chat.

What do all the numbers mean 3.08 4.10 3.55. I have 3.55 regular axle on my F150 and was looking to change it to Limited Slip. I wanted to know what does the different gear sizes mean as far as the performance of the drivetrain, speed is not a big concern for me just something with enough torque to handle a little off roading, mud etc...
I also have the 3.55 reg. axle and am interested in installing either 3.55 LS or perhaps 3.73 LS on the truck.
This is the last time I purchase a truck without at least a LS axle!
What will something like this cost, ball park approximation?
Thanks,
T. Crank
