4.9 engine in a 89 F-150.....
Hello everyone, I havent been here for awhile, but Im looking for some good advice.....
I have a 89 F-150 4x4, 4 speed trans, lock in lock out hubs...
This truck used to be a daily driver until I was laid off and seine then I have been called back to work.....and my old truck has been sitting for almost a year.....but doing all this time I have started it up and moved it around the yard and I have also let it run for 30 minutes at a time....
Before it was parked I did give it a tune up whaile I was still working, ect....
Anyways like I say Im working again now and my old truck has been stiing and I do still start it from time to time....
Ok my truck has 189000 miles on it, and it does have a few leaks, I still have the rear main leaking, its been like this for a few years now, and I also have a freeze plug leaking, along with a oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket leaking....so I also have a good friend who is a good mechanic who told me he would pull the engine and fix all the leaks, if I wanted him to...
Ok if I go this route, should I just have the leaks fixed and run it ?....
Or would it be worth it to have him tear it down and maybe over haul it ?..
The frame has surface rust on it and it looks to still be in good shape, but my cab is starting to have some rusting issures.....this will be a work truck....
However I have been looking at trucks and boy are they high $ here..
Think if I do a overhaul Im more worried about the frame or cab rusting down and all I have is a good engine...dont really know what to do in this situlation, looking for some good advice on this one?.....

If you are going to go to the trouble of pulling the engine, you might as well tear it down and refresh it.
Surface rust on the frame is no biggie (you can paint it with POR-15 or something), but if you have sheet metal rot, you should do something about it before it becomes a structural issue - even if it's just riveting or welding in some patches.

Ok I took a better look at the condition of the truck, I noticed yesterday the Ive got some rust coming out around one of the cab mounts on the driver side.....
I havent did anything yet but if I go to grinding on it and Im sure theres going to be some holes come out whats the best way to repair it ?...
