98 4.2 MAF experience

There a good "how-to-clean your MAF" at http://www.fordf150.net/howto/clean-...low-sensor.php

I just did it, right down to the same brand of electronic cleaner. I won't really know if it worked until I get the truck under load or climbing some hills. I'll try to give an update.

A few additional notes:
1. Go ahead and take the small half of the airbox off. It's tightened on with a radiator-hose type clamp. Just work it lose by wedging it with big blade screwdriver. You'll want to do this because it's easier to get the connector off with the box sideways and facing you.

2. The inner section that actually contains the MAF is not going to come out easily. Just keep gently wedging in the four slots. It might help to have a buddy hold that part still while you work it out.

3. I found that one of the screws holding the MAF in was not a guarded Torx, but just a rounded slotless screw. I used needle nose vice grips to break it loose, then it pretty much came off with fingers.

4. If you're just going to try cleaning it, it would be tempting to NOT take it off, but to spray cleaner into the little intake (you can even see the wires). The only problem might be getting it to evaporate or drain off. I'll leave that up to you.

5. If you look into the big intake hose (the one with the radiator clamp), you'll see the tail end of another sensor. Honestly, I don't know what it is, but I hit it with a shot of electronic cleaner, too, then gently wiped out the hose. Same rule, though - don't touch the ends of sensors with anything.
